Normally I would propose a trade but seeing how Franson is on the Leafs means that the Leafs would not trade with the Habs unless there is an overpayment. It would also be difficult for Toronto to match or retaliate seeing how they are close to the cap limit and haven't signed Kadri yet.

25 yrs old, right shooting defenseman, 6'5" and 29 pts in 45 games last year (on pace for 53 pts in a 82 game season). No chronic injuries (ribs and face are acute). The 3 prior seasons he was on pace for 30 pts per 82 game season.

If I had to take a guess he's looking in the 4M - 4.5M range x 5 years meaning an offer sheet would cost us a 1rst and a 3rd.

Now an offer like that would put us over the cap which means it is not really feasible right now (why did we re-sign Bouillon mid-year?), but could work if MB is able to move Moen or Diaz, etc.

Huge no.

Not worth the money nor the picks let alone both.

Good player, but not really what we need and not worth spending the picks to get him. I would rather shop our 1st and 3rd elsewhere.

He's on the trading block I hear. I'd definitely try and deal for Franson. Big rugged two way right handed dman. He'd be in our top 4, and would be a great fit next to Markov

Gorges-Subban
Markov-Franson
Tinordi-Diaz

He's not rugged or two way dman. He's a taller MAB. Certainly not a top four dman.

I watch alot more Leafs games that most of you then. Franson is a great young dman, and would immediately be in our top 4.

The truth is somewhere in between...

To call him "rugged" would be pushing the truth a little but he is definitely not a cream puff like MAB. He will take the body and try and clear the crease but he doesn't do either with a lot of authority.

Franson is more of a pp specialist as he has a great shot and has decent vision. His biggest drawback is easily his obvious lack of foot speed. This makes him a bit of a liability at times and is probably better suited as a bottom pairing guy who gets time on the powerplay.

He doesn't interest me at all as I would much prefer a Coburn type that can actually play a shut down role. We already have Markov and his deteriorating skating to man the point alongside Subban.

I'd give up Diaz and a late round pick for him. He's younger, bigger, and as good offensively.

Will cost a lot more though. Diaz has a 1.225 mil cap hit and Franson is looking for 4+ mil, we'd be doing the TML a favor.

The leafs are probably looking to trade Franson but there may be some misconceptions on Franson, this is what he is.

- Isn't great defensively
- Moderate Skater, what really holds him back
- Amazing Offensively, Great Slap shot
- Big Body, uses it when he feels like it

I think unless the offer sheet is a 1st and 3rd the leafs will match

Throws big hits?

Obviously you don't watch too many TML games. Franson is a pretty one dimensional player. Below average defensively and soft.

You can't call the guy soft.....he threw more hits than anybody on the Hab's roster.
He doesn't hit to hurt and doesn't play with an edge but calling him soft is quite an exaggeration.

I found this season to be a bit anomalous in Franson's career to date. He might have noticed that he was getting close to fringe status in the NHL the previous couple of years, and it seemed like he stepped up and played a bit harder. He normally is softer IMHO, and he's slow. The trick is guessing whether he's going to keep playing that way and step up, or whether it was just a quick half-season burst in a contract year. I wouldn't take him, too much risk that he'd settle back down for me.

Hopefully the 4+ mil was just Dreger speculating, I'd give him 3 mil for sure. We'd have two lethal PP lines with him.

While I would share some of your concerns it should be noted that this didn't start last season. He threw a lot of hits the previous season while playing fewer minutes per game.

I have seen a lot of Franson as I live in the GTA. He is absolutely not soft and is definitely slow. He really started to put his entire game together in the last half of the past season but his poor mobility is what would keep me from acquiring him.

I have seen many Leaf and Predator games and have watched Franson closely. He is NOT rugged, average at best defensively and I don't recall him ever throwing a big hit. Run clear of players like this. He will get a large deal which the GM who signs him will regret for years.

124 hits isnt good enough?

Emelin had 110 hits and the next highest DMan was Boullion. Yes, Frankie ****ing Boullion second on the team in hits for DMen with 78.

Franson is exactly what this team needs. A big body DMan who isnt afraid to hit and can score points.

But no, Montreal does not need to get involved in offer sheets. Not much good comes from that.

While I have defended him as not being soft with the statistical evidence that he throws hits.......he doesn't hit to hurt. Emelin threw 14 fewer hits in 7 fewer games but you can't even begin to try and state that there is any similarity in the way that they hit.

Franson is not what we need as he is a defensive liability and skates like he has lead feet. We need one more big, physical and mobile defender who can play against the other teams top lines and punish opponents in front of the net. Franson may throw hits but he punishes nobody as his measley 8 PIM would suggest.

Forget about PIM for now. I know, I am the biggest advocate for toughness and fighting. But we have needs on this team regarding our D that Franson would address. (We could always sign Murray for the PIM increase..............but Bergy's shopping spree with DD, Boullion and Briere eliminated that possibility)

He may have lead feet but he scored one point less than Markov with twice as many hits. That is a combination of skills that we havent seen in Montreal for a long time.
