"Well back in my day....."

My equipment is mostly from the 70's; obviously I haven't played in years. (2005 last game.)

But I can remember playing in the late 90's/early 2000's (recreational by then) and looking at other players faces when they saw my old cooper shoulder pads, my Bobby Hull-Black Hawks elbow pads, and my 1979 Cooper pants. Like I had robbed a museum or something. My skates and sticks were newer.

They were even more surprised when I could still skate, move, and shoot better than most of them. Point is you learn how to use what you have - as mentioned in this thread earlier.

However, as someone who played a little goal (admittedly not real well), I would love to try out the new goalie equipment just once. Damn those old horsehair pads were heavy - especially when they got wet. There is zero chance I could even attempt to play today's goalie style in them though, as I wouldn't have the flexibility or strength to do so.

Cool feature, and cool thread helax!
Some old goalies did play butterfly . I preferred the old shoulder pads as a forward tho just cuz its so much easier to move. Would never block a shot with my chest tho

It can go that fast in dogs because in two decades’ time a dedicated breeder can easily roll through 10-20 generations of pups. In the same time period, you can produce 1 generation of human.

Currently, the maximum number of generations for which any family has “selected” NHL players is 4 (Howie Morenz -> Blake Geoffrion) so we’re probably looking at another 100 years minimum before genetic selection really becomes a relevant factor.
If some crazy person wanted to make a super race you could probably push breeding to around 14 years for each gen of humans for each generation / use 50 women and donate them fertilized eggs but it's a bit (alot) insane .

(I can’t believe we’re having this conversation, I promise I’m not a eugenicist)

The trouble with that approach is that you don’t have an athletically mature person at 14. We’ve all seen how guys like Sean Day can look like phenoms at that age, and turn out not to even be NHL level athletes.

You’d really need to hold off till closer to 25-30 to get a complete sense of how that person would develop physically for the purpose of genetic selection.

Could probably use athletes now idk like lebbron and someone that matches and either go quantity or wait a bit .idk it's interesting.

First gen wouldn't be hard to pick who you wanted to use

looks like he just ate shit turning which happens to everyone if you catch an edge. Doubt you need crazy ankles I'm super lazy but can outskate most people.

It's why I don't like diving calls cuz you will see mcdavid or hall eat shit with no-one around them a couple times a game and if a stick is somewhere around someones feet and they fall the other fan base always wants a diving call. But idk I tape the hell out of my ankles and pretty much only fall when I turn hard enough for the tape to break mid turn

Oh absolutely they did! We had Roger Crozier here in Buffalo!

The new skates (or newer skates) for goalies present less coverage on the blades, which means they don't have to "shuffle" like before. Consequently the angle is less pronounced, and goalies can slide or push off better from the butterfly position. Jonathan Quick is particularly adept at this.

Quite the evolution in goaltending from what I remember.

All good conversation. This is a really good thread, you guys rock.....
