So the Mariners are really going full Atlanta Hawks and breaking up a team one step from contending for the sake of tanking.

Wow...

Ballsy trade.

Allegedly the Mariners think Paxton's health is a ticking time bomb, which given the nature of pitching it might be. Or it's just a rationalization for doing what they were gonna do anyway.

Not really surprised Sheffield's heading the trade, they didn't seem to even want to find a spot for him in the rotation.

Did you see their run differential last year? They are the same frauding Mariners. They had to make changes.

Well they were without their best player for 80 games too, granted because of juicing but still this whole win or tank mentality in MLB is just getting to be too much now.

just a case of bad luck

NYY, BOS, and HOU are the top contenders in the AL and now you have OAK and TB on the up again. M's weren't better than any of those teams

They're not even close to contending and are going to have to spend big (while already having a big payroll) to get the necessary pieces required to contend.

Paxton is only signed for 2 more years and will likely walk in UFA after that. The Mariners won't be contending in either 2019 and 2020. They now have Sheffield who could possibly headline their rotation for the next 6 years, which is when they might start being a contender. This was the right move for the Mariners.

There's one.

Cashman said he was looking for at least 2 elite rotation pitchers. Sheffield is a good return for the Mariners if they were dealing Paxton, he has major promise.

I would have given that Mariners core at least one more year before hitting the reset button.

Unless King Felix is going to magically turn back the clock by about 7 or 8 years overnight, that team is screwed going into 2019.

I didn’t agree with the Mariners necessarily tearing it down but this seems like a good move for them. Paxton is a hell of a pitcher but the ticking time bong thing is apt in my opinion. Sheffield is a legit piece to get back. No turning back now. Better go scorched earth and hope it works.
