I forget who but someone told me they thought this team is way more consistent than last years. I almost blew beer out of my nose. This team is bipolar. The best game of the year, followed by this. Not worth losing your shit over, we’re still right in it and the Rags always have our number. Move on.
I felt a lot of push back on how I feel about Staal, good to see some others get frustrated with him...but at the same time he isn’t going anywhere. I’ve accepted what kind of player he is, but it is concerning when the whole team plays like him. Rod loves him.
Yeah, as Rod said (paraphrasing), last year he could count on 1 hand the # of times where he thought they laid an egg. This year, it happens quite often.
I guess in hindsight, we should have expected it. They played at an incredibly intense pace (playoff hockey) for half the season last year. They basically outworked other teams and that can be draining and tough to sustain. I'd like to chalk it up to new players, but even some of the guys that were on the team last year aren't cutting it. They are going to need to get it together though, and go on a bit of a run or playoffs won't happen.
I said before the season started that I thought the Ranger's would compete for a playoff spot and now they remind me of Carolina last year. Getting hot at the right time. The top teams in the east in points % since Jan 1st?
TBL, BOS, PIT, CLB, NYR, PHI.
Even FLA (.568), WSH(.553), and BUF (.553) have a better points % than Carolina (.550) does since 1/1.
RE: Staal, I was definitely wrong on him. I expected him to be his usual defensive horse that would have ups and downs and end ups with 45-50 points like he has every other year with the Canes (82 game pace). He'd frustrate us at times, but that's what I expected. He'll be lucky to hit 30 if he doesn't turn things around and go on a hot streak. Lord knows the team could use that. Aho/Svech/TT are the only ones carrying the team right now and that won't last as they'll cool off.
