Yes it was.

And I’m not kidding, the block of ~30 App State guys in my section were easily the drunkest and most obnoxious group I’ve seen this season. They tried to start TWO group fights in the course of the evening, one with Canes fans and the other with Rangers fans.
They don’t have a lot going for them. They are APP St fans.

Tom remember when you said you would question Rod and expect good answers?

Now is a good time to ask some questions about his captain and all that ice time. Look no further than the beautiful turnover.....worse than anything Fleury has done...

On the topic of Fleury figure out why he was in the dog house. Especially since he's one of the guys showing some balls and attitude when other teams want to push this soft group around.

They're just pissed both the Canes and the Rangers are too scared to play App.

Listening to Staal’s post game whatev type of commentary after these losses always blows my mind. Half the time I just don’t think he really gives a damn. Like he gets paid either way, right? It’s bizarre that we have such a fiery coach coupled with such a blah captain.

I kinda got lambasted earlier in the season when I said that we often lack the mental toughness and fortitude to stick with it no matter what. Maybe it’s a learned behavior.

It's pretty f***ing blatant this team has adapted his 'who gives a shit' mentality about games like this

There is no urgency anymore. There is always a tomorrow. We'll always get them during the next game. Got bloodied tonight? Aww shucks well that's the way them apples fall sometimes.

Just a night and day difference from how they played last year. Last year they had a purpose and an urgency to achieve that goal. This year? Cant say the same

WHERE IS THE ****ING ENERGY, WHERE IS THE SPITE, WHERE IS THE HATE, WHERE IS THE ZEAL, WHERE IS THE VIGOR, WHERE IS THE INTENSITY, WHERE IS THE LUST FOR LIFE, TODAY AND VICTORY.

WHERE IN THE UNHOLY DEPTHS OF HELL IS IT.

ALL I ASK IS JUST SOME STUPID DESIRE. DESIRE TO SHOW SOMETHING GREATER THAN EXPECTED. DESIRE TO GET BACK AT THE WORLD. DESIRE TO BE BETTER.

Thats f*cked up.

This fanbase doesn't need the fighting reputation.

It’s somewhat of a side effect of the resurgence. I remember more aggressive fans back in the team’s first run of success. During the dark ages there weren’t a lot of nights where the building was packed for an important game and band wagoners were coming in fighting-level drunk. Lately it’s been getting back to that level again.

It’s also a nuance of inviting so many college fans into the building. The “bro” crowd that shows up hammered is really difficult to merge with families and elderly people only a few feet away.

It felt like an away game in our own house. Lots of no shows in the arena with all the blue. Afterwards, the chants, chirping, horn blowing and amped up celebrations by their fans was pretty extreme for a regular season match up.

I forget who but someone told me they thought this team is way more consistent than last years. I almost blew beer out of my nose. This team is bipolar. The best game of the year, followed by this. Not worth losing your shit over, we’re still right in it and the Rags always have our number. Move on.

I felt a lot of push back on how I feel about Staal, good to see some others get frustrated with him...but at the same time he isn’t going anywhere. I’ve accepted what kind of player he is, but it is concerning when the whole team plays like him. Rod loves him.

EASILY the worst behaved group of fans I’ve dealt with all season. Loud, obnoxious, foul mouthed. I’m seriously hoping we don’t have to see them again for a long, long time.

Not the Rangers fans, they were fine. The App State fans.

Well that's embarrassing. We always have a few idiots at the football games, just like any other school I guess. But it sucks to hear they found their way here and represented us like that. They really are a small subset of the fanbase. Sorry you had to deal with the underbelly tonight.

See i remember the pushback when I called J. Staal a cap dump (HAHAHAHA I WAS RIGHT) but at the same time i've always thought "but leadership" was a bullshit excuse. otoh i was totally wrong in the estaalo debates (he truly did not take his offseason training seriously) so i don't know. I waver to the counterfactual that I can't truly know, on the other hand this team is literally on pace to have the most successful season in in 11 years which is a pretty good indictment on J.Staalo's leadership style.

In conclusion we suck against the Rags + they had the opportunity to go balls to the wall in a self described playoff game while the 'Canes had to keep some in reserve to everyone calm down. I hate how the reactionaries have taken over this board.

Yeah, as Rod said (paraphrasing), last year he could count on 1 hand the # of times where he thought they laid an egg. This year, it happens quite often.

I guess in hindsight, we should have expected it. They played at an incredibly intense pace (playoff hockey) for half the season last year. They basically outworked other teams and that can be draining and tough to sustain. I'd like to chalk it up to new players, but even some of the guys that were on the team last year aren't cutting it. They are going to need to get it together though, and go on a bit of a run or playoffs won't happen.

I said before the season started that I thought the Ranger's would compete for a playoff spot and now they remind me of Carolina last year. Getting hot at the right time. The top teams in the east in points % since Jan 1st?

TBL, BOS, PIT, CLB, NYR, PHI.

Even FLA (.568), WSH(.553), and BUF (.553) have a better points % than Carolina (.550) does since 1/1.

RE: Staal, I was definitely wrong on him. I expected him to be his usual defensive horse that would have ups and downs and end ups with 45-50 points like he has every other year with the Canes (82 game pace). He'd frustrate us at times, but that's what I expected. He'll be lucky to hit 30 if he doesn't turn things around and go on a hot streak. Lord knows the team could use that. Aho/Svech/TT are the only ones carrying the team right now and that won't last as they'll cool off.

There you go. Play like a bunch of timid children during the game, tuck tail when the opponent bodies you physically, won't stand up for teammates who get head shotted, and then openly mocked post game.

This is such a perfect embodiment of how soft we are in this division. It's truly pathetic and if we want to have any hope of ever again seriously contending here we need to develop some nastiness and an ability to stand up for ourselves. We are way too soft for the Metro and it will be our undoing this year.

Ouch. I’d hope that gets remembered....though I don’t have a lot of hope they’d do something about it.

You’re right. Last year was the only team that wasn’t really soft over the last decade, they definitely stood up for themselves when they had to.

Playoffs are tough, we’re not. We let go of grit and didn’t bring much back, Martinook has had a rough season and he was one to bring it. I’ll be curious if there’s an effort to bring in more of Rod’s type of guy. I’m sure if they can find some that mix grit with skill they would.

They don't know how to be physical without taking a penalty so they just shy away from it. We need to bring in some guys who can show how to be physical within the rules and that has to be a priority. We have enough guys who can throw some weight around that we should be physical but they haven't been taught how to do it.
