I haven't seen that much of Gauthier but Motte is a good player from a Sens fan perspective. He started the year really well and then he struggled (much like Joseph) when Norris got hurt and Pinto moved up to the 2nd line. That line was really good to start the year and was producing with tons of speed and tenacity.

The Sens bottom 6 struggled after the Norris injury and with Formenton not playing. Trade is a no brainer for the Rangers. Likely they can re-sign him in the offseason if they want as well and Gauthier loss is easy to fill. Motte is also a playoff type player and he has underrated offensive instincts. He does everything at full speed. Only issue with him is he can't stay healthy.

For the Sens they needed a cheap RW for bottom 6. Watson likely to be traded or won't be re-signed so they need a 4RW for next season and/or to end the year. Likely ends the year on the 3rd line with Joseph (MJ on the LW) and Pinto. Will get opportunity to play more minutes so it makes sense.

Gauthier > Motte

Rangers must feel Motte can offer them something particular that Gauthier does not. Seems like an add trade. Motte was a good fit with the rangers when he was there so maybe that is what they’re banking on?
Penalty killing.

I hate the trade though. I liked gauthier.

No, he’s absolutely not. You’re probably looking at a chart and not watching much of either player.

Gauthier is decent at drawing penalties, but has zero hockey IQ and finishing ability. He isn’t good defensively and doesn’t understand basic elements to the game like puck support and positioning. He’ll drive to the net looking like he’s Rick Nash, but he can’t finish and doesn’t use his size often enough. If he isn’t driving to the net, he’s not doing much. Not a bad player, but a one trick pony who has a lot of tools, but no toolbox.

Motte is a far superior defensive player and penalty killer. Motte is what the Rangers need right now.

Julien Gauthier is a physical freak in terms of size / speed ratio. If you’re looking for a comparable player style - Alex Tuch (not saying he is Tuch skill level).

Give him time at 3RW and he could be a 15 -20 goal scorer.

Opposition’s 3rd String Goalies got the NYR to the ECF.
Raanta is not a 3rd string goalie. Vasilevskiy is not a 3rd string goalie. Jarry and Desmith were not 3rd string goalies.

Pittsburgh was also up 3-1 in the series and was leading in Games 5,6 AND 7 and managed to lose all 3 games and the series. The only game Domingue really stuck out was Game 6 and Jarry played in Game 7. We're really pinning that all on Domingue? Definitely his fault the Penguins lost game 7 despite leading going into the 3rd and still leading with 5 minutes left in the 3rd, despite not playing.

Carolina was also up both 2-0 and 3-2 in that series and lost.
