Namest, 4.0 x 2 reduced by half to 2.0 + Strome 3.1 x 2 + Smith 4.35 x 3 = 9.45
for
McKeown .745 expiring with RFA + rights to unsigned Adam Fox + TVR 2.3 x 2 + cap dump Darling 3.125 current then 3.075 x 2 +
cap hit = 6.170
total cap dif is 9.45 - 6.17 = 3.28 savings to Rangers, not negligible but that is part of the deal, CAR still has over 10m cap after the trade.

Canes get the 2 best players atm, Fox an x factor. Canes have a glut of RD, but McK and Fox are not on the roster and TVR is behind Pesce, Hamilton + Faulk at RD and Smith who is consistent only as to toughness and unreliable otherwise, is your 7th; he's a lefty who plays right side, so no immediate loss as to NHL RD roster, no current depletion of LD by Carolina, with Smith actually a reserve option for LD,
The 4+m Smith costs is offset by 3+ from taking on Darling + 1m on half of Namest.
Carolina gets more immediate production now in the area of need, F.

Rangers get some immediate help in their area of need, RD, but the gamble is on Fox, who we are taking on faith will sign with us, and who we trust is a real blue chip material/upside. Darling is now an epic fail but there is an outside chance goaltending guru Benoit Allaire might return him to form. If that happens and he can be flipped somehow next year, fine, if not, we bury him in the A.

This helps thin NY's excess at pivot, which helps give more mins to those remaining both improving familiarization with Coach Q's system and, with a thinner roster, helps make us tireder for balance of season = more losses = better shot for post season draft.

NY gets cap relief and Canes get F boost without surrendering any picks.

4.35 x 3 is 13.05

has any team ever traded 3 RDs in the same trade? even accounting for prospects, AHL players, etc.

13 pts in 47 games and 16 pts in 44 games dont really scream "more immediate production" to me, especially for giving up Fox.

Carolina also takes overall more cap and the worse cap dump...

Canes getting real immediate actual help, Rangers get potential

they get more cap b'c they get 2 players now and send back only 1 cap dump for 1 cap dump
it is disingenuous to say more overall cap otherwise that the explanation in the above sentence.

On the cap dumps directly, it is 4 something total [Smith but Rangers add 2 mil relief balance both of Namest seasons. Smith 4.35 - 2 = 2.35, which is favorable compared to Darling 3x].

show me an expiring cap Canes can add Rangers would accept and I'll consider it

As to worse cap dump in terms of player performance
Smith is actually bottom level D able to play in the NHL, Darling no longer can.

Canes have expertise w/Ds,
Rangers have expertise w/Gs

both sides should try to optimize toward their strength

you may be right on those specs, but just fyi
according to NYR official site, it is 16 points in 44 games
last season was AV fup
more significantly,

he has a track record for the eye test given he played first line very well with Stamkos.

His production now is nowhere near that but he is not playing w/top line guys either, let alone a Stamkos level pivot

There's room for improvement on the +/-, but it is fair to say a good chunk of that is on our D.

As to best of the known commodities, I would prefer righty Strome, former 5OA, who has disappointed relative to that, tho fair explanation is him playing on less than stellar teams.
Strome has played well of late and suggests a solid add.
He recently said to effect he prefers vision of pivot as to W

Names + Strome help CAR in pivotal pivot area.

I think you forgot to include the good player, or asset that makes Canes even think about this,

It should be sell-able as is for reasons stated
No reason to throw in a Buch, etc, and what would Canes add vs that?

Yeah, it is not the sexy deal the herd at the boards insists on, but it is arguably productive for both clubs
