Gauthier in his first game looked pretty good. Looks like he has the tools. Drew a penalty on a breakaway he created with his speed. Was on the 4th line so didn't play much

Having the tools has never been his limitation. Does he have a tool box? That remains to be seen. I hope he works out for you guys, just not tomorrow.

Gauthier looked good in his debut with NYR. I like his speed and he definitely plays a power game...once he gets moving he is hard to stop.

He was good along the boards and was not afraid to shoot.

I think that once he adjust to the new team and new linemates and a new system, he will do well in NYR.

Kreider sucks defensively.

Which should say something about the comparison.

But IMO this kind of winger can get away with being somewhat weak defensively. The real issue is hands, and puck awareness. I watched Gauthier’s shifts closely last night and they resembled the preseason performances that made him a late-cut for the Canes. He had a lot of touches on the puck, for the amount of time he played. People get excited when they see a player getting so involved. But go back through those touches and look at how many were passes behind a teammate, turnovers up the defensive zone wall, or just shoveling the puck in a direction. That’s the part of his game that holds him back, and it’s been evident since the day he arrived for rookie camp.

Which isn’t to say he won’t get better. He has improved and should continue to do so. At this point it’s down to, can he soften his touch and start to think the game at NHL speed? If so, he’s a Kreider type top-6 winger. If not, he’s a guy who runs around making “noise” and a couple of interesting rushes a game without producing much.

Wherever I'm standing atm
Sometimes it does, especially in trade value if they try to trade him in the future, it looks better. Sometimes a coach is not as fast to give up on a young player and more reluctant to send him down.
What trades do we know for sure occurred where this mattered for guys in gauthier's stratosphere?
It didnt even work for pool party

And it's not even remotely the same as ignoring 10 years of experience.

It's more like considering a very extended internship and a lack of experience that should exist by now.

I'm excited. Not saying hes a bust or a bum at all. I just disagree with your comparison

He's already a better 4th liner than Michael Haley or Brenden Smith, so I'll take it as a win.

Like this analysis. Only seeing one game with the Rangers you can see he has amazing speed, but he plays almost to fast for his own good which causes him to rush his decisions.

Once he learns the proper times to use his speed he could be a deadly player. With his size he should be able to out muscle people and shouldn't have to rely on playing so fast and out of control

Kinda weird trade. Don't really get it for Carolina's end. It's not wildly unbalanced value i guess, but Gauthier seems like the more valuable piece. Hard to have too many big goal-scoring wingers like that.
