I am really surprised he would take a deal that would take him into his 30s for under $5M AAV. Red Wings won on this contract

I feel like he's underpaid given what the rest of the players are signing for.

Ok lets hope he can continue to develop. When he's on his game he's a pretty dangerous sniper with some playmaking skill too. He need to show up better in the PO's.

It doesn't actually. He'll be 29 when it expires, and he'll be up for a big UFA summer if he manages his cards right.

Excellent. Perfectly fair deal that eliminates short-term risk of losing him, keeps him in Detroit during what should be his prime years, and plenty of time to evaluate where he fits in long term and extend him if necessary.
