The AAV is too high but the 8 year commitment and his ability to keep improving every is well worth the extension. He's been a beast for a long time.

At the end of the day I'd much rather overpay Nylander by 1M or so than to overpay for a 4th line forward.

Losing Nylander to keep Tavares would have been a huge mistake.

Next year we will be suck with Tavares and Nylander making 11 and 11.5 but the year after Tavares is off the books and things will be fine.

Seems like a really big number right now.....but in year three onward with expected cap progression, should be just fine for an elite player like Nylander. Short term pain for long term (8 years!) gain.
Fully expect number 88 to be in the rafters at the end of the contract and he retires. Would have rather seen it be 8 years 88 million for number 88.....but that is just me being weird with numbers.

seriously, nylander is going to be tied for 5th highest salary in the NHL...while being the 32nd most productive player since entering the league.

Just have to squeeze all the salaries for 1 season till Tavares comes off the books and resigns to a much better team friendly contract. Marner will get his big new contract also and it will be in the hands of Tavares if he wants to stay or not by taking a big discount

My question is always, what would other teams have offered him? Impossible to know, but if he stayed on pace and hit the FA market on July 1, what would he have been offered?

Obviously 7 year max. I have a feeling at least a team or two would have offered the same or more. I think it is too much, but, it's nice to have nice players to continue to cheer for.

People like to forget Tavares was offered 12 mil / season and took (ONLY!) 11 to be a Leaf. Maybe in the end Willy took a cut too.
