These kind of stats are always misleading. It's an example of selection bias. Of course the team is going to do well when you only look at games where [insert player here] scores, because you're only looking at games in which a positive thing happened. To use a ridiculous example, Capitals are also undefeated when their goalies get a shutout.
Except when the goalie records a shutout the team can't lose. If player X scores a goal they can.

You can lose in a 0-0 shootout and still get credit for a shutout.

But, as I mentioned in that post, I was using a ridiculous example to demonstrate my point. It was intentionally hyperbolic to help people understand the concept of selection bias.

No it was a false equivalency. The losing goalie in the shootout doesn't get a shutout.
