I don't believe I have ever gone to the theatre for a James Bond movie and I doubt this will help me get there.

That said, a lot of stuff that people complain about being "diversity casting" is really just studios throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks. They would make Hitler 007 if they thought it would net them a bigger return than the last film.

And moves like this get attention from very predictable segments of the "online discourse" so studios know they can rely on these decisions creating buzz and getting attention for their product. There is a segment that will be "triggered" at the mere suggestion of a "Black 007" and start tweeting like mad. Plus they get the "backlash to the backlash" tweeters who will now treat "Black 007" as a significant cultural milestone that deserves respect and admiration.

Marketing teams must be over the moon these days with how easily and predictably they can control "the discourse".

One of the problems with people being so concerned with characters being the same race and gender that they were when they were created is that Hollywood is largely just rebooting existing franchises.

If you're a woman or a minority man and you want to be in one of these huge action movies you're going to have far fewer opportunities if you can't play any of these old iconic characters since they were most likely originally written or portrayed as white men. If Hollywood was creating more huge hits out of new ideas and franchises this wouldn't be as much of a problem. But since the box office is dominated by old franchises there's not as much room left for women and minorities to get into these big hits without changing an existing characters race or gender.

And really who cares? Is there any good reason 007 couldn't be a woman? There's been 24 James Bond movies, they could probably use something that adds a different dimension to the character at this point anyways.

I'm sure this is the kind of internal dialogue the studios have. Why can't we do this? They do it....and it tanks. The Bond franchise is stale but going in this kind of direction isn't going to help it.

Well they aren't actually going in that direction as far as we know, it's just a part of the new Daniel Craig Bond film. If it's true that people wouldn't go see the next 007 movie just because Bond was black or a woman though that's pretty pathetic.

they can make their own thing within the universe without taking the 007 code and pissing off the fanbase.

We've had female agents in the Bond universe already

0013 is a female, as is 004

Even in Skyfall, they made Moneypenny an agent rather than a secretary.

Point being, it's been done before and would take little to no effort, and avoid backlash by simply expanding the Bond universe and introducing the female agent with her own 00 number.

would've been much better if they had Idris Elba as the new Bond and introduce Lashana Lynch's 00 agent together

IMAGINE GETTING PISSED OFF OVER SOMEONE OTHER THAN BOND TAKING 007

IT'S JUST A f***ING NUMBER

SMH  and all these people such as yourself so offended  007 SHOULD ONLY BE BOND. 007 IS NOT FOR LADIES. What the hell man?

It is absolutely mindblowing that people are so upset and uptight over someone being named 007 despite it making perfect sense in terms of the storyline. Bond is in retirement, what are they supposed to do about his number? They can't retire it to the rafters  This ain't hockey. Someone else is obviously going to take the number. Crisis averted.

Smh.

The problem with that is that audiences don't go to see new characters to the extent that they go to see old ones, people go to see things they already know. A 007 movie is an easy movie to get butts in the seat for, a 00-whatever wouldn't be as easy to market. Same thing with the superhero movies that have been dominating the box office for a decade, most of these characters are white and creating a new superhero is a risky venture. Why put in the effort and take the risk to make a new hero when you could just bring out Batman or Spiderman yet again?

I get what you're saying but it's not quite realistic when you look at the state of the industry. Creating new characters in these franchises just for women and minorities instead of allowing them to play the existing ones isn't really going to work.

It's amazing seeing people freak out over this. If you're really upset that a woman is taking the 007 code, well honestly, grow the f*** up :help:

There's no good reason why 007 couldn't be a women in this day and age (60 years ago, things would've been different).

There are about 334523 reasons why James Bond can't be a women.

I am probably the biggest Bond movie fan on this board.

I am far more pissed they went three movies under Craig without a proper opening gunbarrel sequence than this.

I'm an even bigger fan than you and it made A LOT of sense for Casino Royale.

Lol of course they have to go with something like Jane Bond. Then they can still use the old "Bond, ___ Bond" line and it would probably even get a laugh.

I think people are confused that James Bond would be a woman which leads to the triggering. James Bond will always be James Bond.

All this arguing and drama makes me actually want to see James Bond movies again. It was a phase I grew out of but all the whining about how 007 is now a woman is hilarious and so ignorant in my opinion.

Has this not been revealed to be a troll? Especially since the source story for this has her taking over as 007 AS HER FREAKING MCU CHARACTER! Not bloody likely! I'm calling hogwash on this. But a quick Wikipedia visit shows she IS in the cast as a character named Nomi. So we'll see. Or at least others will...I haven't seen Spectre still and likely will skip this one. I've finally put my finger on why I haven't liked the franchise since Connery and Moore retired from the role...they've changed the film's genre. It used to be a "spy film". Now they're just action movies with a famous spy character in the central role. Just not as good. Completely changing the character to match modern PC standards doesn't help either, but ultimately the tone of the films is completely different and just not as appealing.

You see, that's not what is happening. But please go on.

Spy Movies? Really?

The closest thing to a Spy Movie this franchise came since From Russia is probably Daylights, in which none of Moore or Connery were starring.

Isn't 00- just a status / rank within MI-6?

No issue with her being he next upcoming 00 agent...as long as they don't to make her the 'James Bond' as Jane Bond or whatever.

Let her be her own 00 agent.

Couldn't they have at least made her Asian or Latino so we could have a little bit more diversity in movies?

Most of the roles are just white(as per usual) and black folks now. Other groups are still getting under represented more, seems like there should be more focus right now on getting their numbers up.
