No player in the NHL utilizes high-speed like MacKinnon and its not even close..

I wonder how he will adapt his game once his speed starts to go. It’s typically the first skill to go as you get older and he clearly relies on it much more than the other elite players.
So him being faster, means he will last longer than other players, as their speed will go quicker, and have less speed to lose.

Good for Necas. I knew he was fast, but didn't expect to see him in this kind of company.

Yeah as frightening as he is coming in at mach 10 when he can only hit mach 8, can he transition to the smart, old man game?

isn't it because he has all the open ice while skating through the neutral zone on the PP while the opposing team backs up into their own zone. The Avalanche get a TON of Powerplays.
This definitely plays a part.

Looking at NHL Stats the top two players for PP TOI is MacKinnon (1st) and Rantanen (2nd).
MacKinnon has :
13% more PP TOI than 4th place (Kucherov)
20% more PP TOI than 10th place (Pasternak)
41% more PP TOI than 50th place (Stutzle)
McDavid is not even in the top 50 players for PP TOI having missed a few games.

His hat trick the other night is probably one of the most impressive hat tricks I've seen. Nobody should be that much faster than their peers in the best league in the world.
Honestly as much as he has already done i think those three blistering goals will end up being my lasting impression of him, like mcdavid splitting the entire team and going in for the goal against the rangers

The way MacKinnon cuts through the middle with speed like that, a little bit recklessly, reminds me a lot of how Lindros used to play. Good for MacK that guys like Kasparaitis and Stevens are retired, or it could have been ugly. Wasn't he still once clipped by Taylor Hall of all people?

Considering Kucherov has scored more points while spending much of his time at a dead stop, it sounds to me like MacKinnon is just a highly inefficient player who wastes a lot of valuable energy. It’s probably why he has to compensate by eating all that chickpea pasta while Kuch can enjoy an ice cold beer whenever he wants.

He's a beast physically and one of the fastest players in the league, but that in particular felt like a Bogosian moment and much as it was a MacKinnon moment.

so what you're saying is, MacKinnon is cooked once his speed declines?
With his attention to health, diet and training, I don't think that'll be a problem for a very long time. Mike Gartner was around 37 when he set the fastest skater record in 1996.

You seem to be the most knowledgeable hockey fan in Edmonton! Quite impressive stuff!!

It's more so his stamina that will decline rather than his actual ability to skate fast, but as you say he appears to take diet and training more seriously than anyone in the league so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get even better from here before he slowly declines.

For me, the difference between McDavid and MacKinnon is in MacKinnon’s stockier build. He’s an inch shorter but also 10 pounds heavier.

McDavid with his slighter build is more likely to throw on the brakes, circle back, and look for a trailer or a shot from distance. MacKinnon’s not even slowing down, he’s taking you straight to the goal line and there’s a pretty good chance nobody is stopping him.

It’s like watching Gretzky and Lemieux again. When the puck is on McDavid’s stick, you wait for something unexpected to unfold. When the puck is on MacKinnon’s stick, everyone in the building knows what’s going to happen and the joy is in seeing him do it anyway.

I was just looking at the skating stats for NHL EDGE....lets take a minute to appreciate just how ridiculous MacKinnon is in relentlessly using high speed for his attack.

22+ MPH bursts:

1. MacKinnon - 118
2. McDavid - 65
3. Necas - 49
4. Hintz - 44
5. Tippett - 44

20+ MPH bursts

1. MacKinnon - 706
2. McDavid - 452
3. Point - 434
4. Hintz - 400
5. Necas - 362

This is absolute insanity. I think everyone knows McDavid is faster and still the best skater in the NHL, but there is no denying that MacKinnon brings speed at a frequency that nobody, even McDavid can touch. He literally laps the field. Almost twice as many 22+mph as McDavid this year - and 2.5X more than anyone else. 50% more 20 mph burst than McDavid even. Its crazy.

Even if we look at McDavid the last 2 years healthy - he had 81 and 89 bursts over 22mph. MacKinnon is absolutely blowing that out of the water. Now we only have this data for 3 seasons so its hard to get a picture of the past, but there's a good chance there has never been a player in NHL history bring this much speed this often. Maybe Bure?
thats pretty cool. what website do u find stats on how fast they skate?

Yeah, Necas legitimately has high-end wheels. His appearance on the list makes sense because on the PP, the Canes give him the puck in the defensive zone and let him tear across the blue lines as a zone entry strategy. Sometimes he really gets moving with that amount of space to work with.

Some more Dungeon & Dragons stats to move the goal posts to say MacKinnon is a better skater than Connor McDavid?

Ok.... I suppose he's better at scoring goals than Auston Matthews and more physically aggressive that Kucherov. You can just invent thing out of thin air.

Let's just use our imagination and say he's more dominant that prime Gretzky if we era adjust.

And he's the toughest player in the league, he could use his 3x better than every other player MPH Burst and Spider Sense to beat up Rempe.

The amount of lies people cling to when the truth is, he's just not finishing strong enough win the Hart, he was a favorite and now he's not. He's just in the mix with the other three.
