Devils have been hit by an insane rash of injuries on defense.

Hamilton is out for the season (or close to it)
Siegenthaler broke his foot and is out for another few weeks.
Smith is out for a few weeks with a sprained knee.

That’s on top of losing Graves and Severson this past off-season. Currently trotting out a D core with three rookies, one sophomore, Marino, and Miller:

Bahl - Nemec
Hughes - Marino
Hatakka - Miller

The last two NHL contracts behind them are either career AHLers (Wotherspoon, Vukojevic) or developing rookie pro defenders (Misyul, Vilen). This makes some sense if only to have a warm body as an extra defender until we get healthy.

Good for DeSimone to get put on Waivers right as there was a team that just needed a body and probably would have claimed whomever the next D that knows what an NHL arena looks like to hit the wire was.

This guy cleared waivers 4 times previously.

Sometimes it happens that way. It also wouldn't surprise me if he's back with the Flames AHL club in a couple weeks when the Devils start to get bodies back.

$775K/$325K 2-way contract, so any additional NHL service time results in a not insubstantial amount more coin in his pocket.

* and had a buryable salary. The Devils wouldn’t have grabbed such a warm body if there was any relevant cap implication. They needed a warm body whose nhl cap hit drops to 0 if and when he gets sent to the minors.

If he gets sent to the minors there's almost a 100% chance that at least Calgary puts in a claim.

No chance the Devils could bury him in their farm system this season.

He should make alright injury filler, better in the OZ than the DZ so maybe that can work better with the Devils than it did here.

I would rather have him than Oesterle in the lineup that's for sure.

I mean, Calgary wants him on the Wranglers too. Kylington is coming back and Poirier will leap frog him too.

Plus we'll probably get a cap dump at the deadline.

Trades are cheaper than waivers so yes, that would be better for both parties.
Not exactly. If CGY trades him for future considerations and NJD puts him back on waivers, if nobody makes a claim to put him on the NHL, he goes to the Devils AHL affiliate. If CGY doesn’t trade him and the Devils put him back in waivers, then if CGY puts in a claim and nobody else makes a claim, he’d go automatically to CGY’s AHL affiliate.

So a trade for nothing is a greater “cutting the bait” than putting a player through waivers even if you knew somebody would claim him.

This could be relevant for the Hawks who recently picked up Jayson Megna and Zach Sanford off waivers and traded a conditional seventh for Rem Pitlick. As players get healthy, they may consider putting a guy or two from there back on waivers. Pittsburgh would have no special right to make a waiver claim for Pitlick just to send him back to Wilkes-Barre.

He's better than Jordan f***ing Oesterle
THIS. Why did we waive the better guy? I'm not saying it's the end of the world losing DeSimone, but wouldn't it have been better to lose Oesterle?

He have 5 top 4 NHL defensemen. Hanifin, Tanev, Andersson, Weegar and Kylington. We have a average 7 in Gilbert. Then our next best guy has been DeSimone. He's not an NHLer, but if you're moving Tanev and Hanifin shouldn't you be hanging onto DeSimone?

Good to know - thanks. I thought it was just a general principle that trades cost less than waivers.

Guy who worked his butt off to make it into the NHL. Has a never give up attitude. Hes earned the chance to be at least NHL depth. Cant see the Flames happy they lost him.
