Oilers' D-men who are definitely better than Franson this season:
None

- probably better than Franson this season:
Sekera

- potentially better than Franson this season (but potentially worse as well):
Klefbom
Schultz

- potentially better than Franson, but unlikely this season:
Reinhart

- probably worse than Franson:
Gryba
Fayne

- flotsam to be jettisoned ASAP
Ference
Nikitin

Franson would be a top 4 defender on this team, and if he signed for what he did in Buffalo, signing him (and buying out the pilon formerly known as Nikita) would have cost exactly the same amount of cap space that waiving Nikitin will this year.

For all we know though, Chia could've been trying to get to Franson but maybe the latter didn't want to budge from his initial ask and Chia said F it and moved on?

Agreed I would have liked to have taken a shot on Franson, the down side is he wanted a 2-year deal or bust it seems like and that would've eaten up all the cap flexibility we have for next summer.

he's also penciled in on the Sabres bottom pairing. The last thing we need is to throw our cap flexibility away on a specialist with no real hockey sense

Glad to see him waived, no surprise he cleared. Now they have to work out what to do with him, because Bakersfield is not the spot for Nikitin.

I wonder if an expensive guy gets waived by another team, clears, and then they swap Nikitin (with something retained) for said player.

Great move!!!

only bad part is hes now in BAK taking TOI away from a prospect. Should let him explore option in the KHL for a loan...dont want this guy or his habits carrying over to our prospects in BAK

You know, for all the *****ing people do about Nikitin, it could be much worse. Philadelphia is waiving Andrew MacDonald, who has 5 more years at $5 million. I guess the only thing they can do is hope he regains his form at some point.

If you could get the Flyers to Retain $1 to $1.5M, would he be an options, or is MacDonald just terrible now?

Was he ever that good in the first place? Always seems to be injuried. Does he even get you 20 points? Doesn't seem particularly good at one thing and what's worse is real dollars go up every year.

I wouldn't take him for all the guys you wanted in the minors combined in a trade.

Fair enough, I don't know that he was that good to begin with, just wondering out loud.

Exactly. And I'm sure the only offers Chia was getting were longer, worse contracts for Niktin, Ference and Scrivens.

This is a problem for all teams. Guys are clearing waivers left and right because of their price tag. It's just how the league is now.

At least our garbage contracts are nearing their end. Hopefully we're not back here with Sekera in a year or two.

Don't mind the move, he should continue his development as a centre, he projects as a top six forward, those players are highly coveted, besides its nice to see that he is being developed properly. Centre men with his skill set are not just handed to you in this league. TBH i would like to see him as second line centre with McD on the first, i love the Nuge but this guy has size, something we really need down the middle to go far into playoffs. Trade Nuge for Shea Weber, no less.

Edit: i am talking about Draisaitl being sent down to AHL, sorry.

Nikitin?

Yeah, I don't know the Oilers trade Nuge for Weber at this point in the franchise.
