I'd say June announcement. The NHL doesn't like any focus being taken away from the playoffs. June announcement lines up with the BOG meeting, end of the season, and the Awards in LV as well.

Might very well be. I was thinking along the lines of an announcement well before hand for that added "pop" for the Awards show.

Your right in the (recent) historical aspect of Expansion announcements, as in June of 1997 when they announced the Blue Jackets, Predators, Thrashers, and Wild.

Ummm...doesn't Quebec have its own thread? Unless you guys are trying to 'de-sleaze' the thread by talking about any city other than Vegas. :D

In a couple months there is going to be an announcement that Vegas is getting a team to start play for the 2017 season. This is a done deal.

'16-'17 season, otherwise they have to refund the deposits.

VegasWantsHockey FAQ said:
Is my deposit refundable if I change my mind after the ticket drive?

A: Deposits are refundable if it is determined that an NHL franchise will not be coming to Las Vegas for the 2016 – 2017 season. Deposits secured during the ticket drive are otherwise non-refundable. Deposits are 100% refundable only if Las Vegas is not awarded a team for the 2016 – 2017 season.

Town NHL hates !
Yeah, they built an arena.

Meanwhile, Gary Bettman is running around talking about Seattle's non-existent arena to anyone who'll listen and breaking news about various alternative ownership groups there. Quebec could start play tomorrow, yet everyone thinks Vegas will be a one off? Why?

I want the Nordiques to come back just as much as anyone but compare the press this Vegas team is getting to them and tell me in what universe you're living to think they're about to enter the league together.

I agree. But that's where my ''hardball'' comment comes from.

Would NHL have done that with Winnipeg, Quebec, even Las Vegas, what would have happened, people all over the place would push buttons to make things done.

Vegas is the best example, someone from NHL told them we will come (in privacy of course). They started building the arena, they got Gary to show up for a presser and they did a ticket drive.

All that while every arrow points to Seattle and Seattle barely started saying they might consider NHL before NBA (and in my opinion, only because they saw their chances of NBA go from X to none, for now anyway).

Lets say I agree with the fact that there is an announcement by NHL about Vegas this year. My next question is : The wording of the announce goes which way ?

A) Las Vegas Team will begin operations on July 1st of 2016 ?
B) Las Vegas Team and Settle Team will get an NHL team, their start of operations is yet to be determined and pending of them having an operational facility. (implies 2017/2018/2019/...)

In one way, Vegas gets screwed because they have to wait on Seattle who still has not put any shovel into the ground.

Yes, correct assumption amongst other influential individuals involved... and dont have to
look that up MNN.... that there XXX Rated... could ding ya for it but I'll let it go this time. :D

Sorry, K. That's not the reference I meant. I was referring to the NYC political situation in 1942, which seems to have a play, here. And, also a newspaper reference from SF at about the same time.

I personally find it interesting where these expressions came from. No one really knows in many cases. And, it's fascinating to read about the different theories.

So, here's another one.

This Vegas thing. Obviously it has been in the works a long long time. For those who have only been following in the last year or so, it might appear like this: "KILROY WAS HERE." Which for me indicates that very very quietly and stealthily, someone we know appeared here before anyone else. And, he is all-powerful. No one knows how he does it or where he will be next, but he is everywhere. Bettman's alter-identity.

Yes indeed it does JJ and thanks for reminding everyone... as for motive in "de-sleazing" the thread, Prostitution & Gambling can be found in every major City (and elsewhere) on the Planet and in some the former legalized, in the latter, widespread, right across Canada & the US. Arizona, Washington State, BC, Ontario... everywhere. Gambling not on the same scale as Vegas but gamblings gambling & its legal. Im not about to condemn nor even paint Las Vegas as "sleazy". Its not. Ive been there & worked there. Unfair characterization for at least 40yrs now. I look at it more as "Party Central" but thats just the strip. No different than say Whistler or Aspen in confined areas, "Villages", any club district in any city only in Vegas youve also got gambling. All kindza crazy going on everywhere else as well be it London or Moscow, Pittsburgh or Pluto. Not gunna throw stones as we all live under a glass dome whereby gambling & prostitution, you want it, you'll find it and legally.

Didn't Gary say something along the lines that the Vegas ticket drive was just to see what the response is and nothing is guaranteed about them getting a team?

100% BS.

Vegas was guaranteed a team for 2016 as long as the ticket drive was successful.

Also curious what Bettmans half brother is doing these days.

... well, he's not really "lying" 2525. Its Gary being Gary. If the We Want Hockey Brigade fell woefully short, couldnt get off the tarmac, then no, not happening. Thing is, there was never any doubt in my mind nor in a lot others that theyd have no problem reaching 10,000 subscribers and of course Bettman knew that. Thats just the way that guy rides as you well know. He doesnt go & showup in Vegas to launch a failure. Foregone conclusion but premature to just come out & state the truth that once this campaign is out of the way as a condition of granting Foley a team... Vegas, your in. This was a done deal before they launched their ticket campaign..... And yes, Gary Bettmans half brother Jeffrey Pollack after working as a Consultant to Andrew Barroways' play for the Coyotes in Arizona last fall joined Team Foley in much the same capacity. He in fact has a home in Vegas & is obviously very familiar with the market, the Maloofs & everyone else involved including the Casino's & wider business community, broadcasters & sponsors etc etc etc.

It's A. The ticket drive was for 16-17 and has been wildly successful, and the NHL has no problems with an odd amount of teams playing temporarily. I guess they could announce a future Seattle expansion at the same time, but LV will be playing in 1.5 years.

Although I hate the way the league does its business (Witness Killion's reference above to Bettman's brother in Vegas. Still this league operates by nepotism. It's the main reason it hasn't really prospered. If they would play straight instead of everything being underhanded they would do better in the end. I could add several things about the Arizona market, but off-topic), you are exactly right in my opinion.

31 team league: 8-8-8-7.
For the east: 30 games against the west, 24 games against other division, 4 with everyone in your own = 82 and very balanced.
For the Pacific (8 teams)... 32 against the east. 21 against the Central. Leaves 29. 4 against everyone in the Pacific + 1 more. The 8 teams pair off perfectly into 4 pairs. Again, very balanced, except 1 game.
Central (7 teams)... 32 against the east. 24 against the Pacific. Leaves 26. 4 against everyone in the Central. Plus 2. Those 2 work out in an easy way, but no details necessary here.
Playoffs: Same as now. Keep te wildcard because not every division has the same number of teams.

And, I might add that the league would prefer to wait on a 2nd expansion award, because franchise values should rise more, and then they can charge more for Seattle or Quebec than they did for Vegas.

This would suggest to me that Quebec would in the end be due a relocation compared to a expansion. 32 teams, I don't think the NHL will go 33 (and no I'm staying FAR away from "which team relocates -those discussions are elsewhere on the boards). Unless of course QC gets a relocation instead of Seattle, and they play in the Western Conference :naughty:

It certainly is sounding like (basing mainly what I am reading here and little bits on the net) that Vegas really is all but a certainty now.

To be fair, given Pollack's background here in Vegas, it would probably be more unusual for him to not be involved. Of course, Vegas isn't happening in a vacuum, and with his past involvements, I get what you're saying.

As to the bold....you don't say?

Sorry, K, but the scale there dwarfs anything else in the other places you mention, and it's not like the entire economic base was built off of other activities. Gambling has gone from being illegal in many places, to somewhat legalized, or at least allowed on native lands.

And.....You can find legal prostitution?

It's sleazy. Sure, it's games people want to play and its their money to spend how they see fit, but let's not make it sound like it's an honorable/noble pursuit, or something that doesn't put some people at great risk financially, socially, individually. Just because you can find these activities in other places doesn't make them less sleazy. Come on.

My own impression of the Vegas metro area is that there are three Las Vegases and you can't make the mistake of conflating them.

There's obviously the Strip, which everyone knows about. It's the only Las Vegas that really gets any press because of their "just the right amount of wrong" style marketing.

Then there is North Las Vegas, which is where most of the sleaze resides, although it is slightly redeemed by the presence of Nellis AFB and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The third Las Vegas - the one which is going to be the lifeblood of the new NHL franchise - is a perfectly normal, everyday suburbacity that you can find virtually anywhere in the Southwest. Because the Strip separates it from the "sleaze area" of NLV, you would never be able to tell that there was anything out of the ordinary, any more than you would in a Southern California, Utah, Arizona, or New Mexico community.

I think people need to understand this because I've seen a lot of criticism of Las Vegas due to the image bestowed on the area by the Strip and NLV that just doesn't apply equally to the bulk of the city.

Vegas is a normal place. Even NLV/the east side aren't really worth mentioning because almost every city has got it's rough places.

It's an image issue, and that's something we can live with. Gaming is what it is, but denigrating the entire place because it happens here is pretty unfair. I rarely see the entire Napa Valley cut down because a small percentage of people can't handle the vice their region produces.

Maybe a little perspective is in order.
