I see it differently, I see NHL fans being so devoted to their team that they don't want to watch any other team when their club is eliminated (almost like they're butthurt in a way). That is why I describe it as tribalism, I met a ton of fans and nobody was close to the amount of passion they had for their sport compared to NHL and NFL fans.

A casual fan to me is someone who's just watching the sport because he's interested regardless of the teams playing and doesn't really ever become a fan of any of the teams currently playing. There are always way more casual fans than truly dedicated fans and why hockey's ratings are behind compared to the likes of basketball or throwball (and baseball to a certain degree). NBA got wild second-round ratings strictly because casual fans wanted to see Curry vs LeBron and not because they were fans of the Warriors or Lakers.
I think you are wrong. If people actually liked the sport of hockey, then ratings would continuously go up as the playoffs go on, as they do in pretty much every other major sport.

Thats why people will watch NFL/NBA/MLB games even when their team isnt involved in the game. They actually like watching the sport itself. Not just watching the sport being played by the home town team

Someone that watches the Blue Jackets/Blues/Blackhawks/(Insert team here) then f***s off once they are eliminated isnt a "die hard fan" of anything

Thoughts?

On the ABC slate it is missing the Rangers-Islanders Stadium Series for Feb 18.

Also Rangers-Panthers on March 23 looks to be an ABC primetime game. It is the only US-US game in that slot (the others are Hockey Night Games with Canadian teams), 8pm is an odd start time for both teams, and ABC usually runs a primetime game the first weekend of the NCAA tournament as the NBA skips the Saturday primetime that weekend.

Actually, that's encouraging!

But it seems the Heat are to remain a force and an impediment to any sustainable hockey growth there. The Heat will always be able to attract top free agents and remain sexy and relevant there and across America. But it would be nice to see a Panther conference final or Final without a Heat run.
And it will get worse with Messi coming

Yep... like we have copious evidence of the following things:

1. Miami is a mediocre sports market in the best of time... too transplant heavy, too much competition for limited entertainment dollars

2. The Panthers, with respect to their diehard fans, have not cultivated a real strong presence in the market at any point in their 30 years of existence and are pretty demonstrably the 5th most popular team in said mediocre market

Add in the fact that the Heat stole any bandwagon effect the Panthers might've gotten before it was obvious they couldn't win the Cup and voila, you have bad ratings. It is a market driven league and the sad thing for the NHL is there are still a small number of real problem markets where the league has had a presence for decades without cultivating widespread interest. It is nowhere near the issue that "grr no teams where it doesn't snow" types make it out to be, but there is no question that a few teams in the league are in suboptimal markets and/or have salted the earth within them via terrible marketing efforts
That’s the problem with the league… it completely market driven . Not saying other major leagues aren’t but they still have captivating stories line and stars you can recognize. The whole “ team first name of the front” hockey culture nonsense is putting hockey off a cliff

ESPN: 681k

Nice!

But obviously due to the huge tv market of Chicago AND the mega hype over a generational talent.

It will no doubt drop significantly next year, even if Chicago somehow drafts first again. Right?

Sorry to be a party pooper so soon!

Last year was the most watched Round 1 of the NHL Draft ever in the U.S.

This year was up 49% from last year.

So, odds of setting a viewership record a third year in a row in 2024?

Haven't seen the peak yet but I'm estimating over 1.0M (in the U.S.) were tuned in to see the Bedard selection.

Two factors:

A) ESPN = more eyeballs
B) Chicago always brings in ratings nationally when the Blackhawks, Bears, Cubs, and Bulls are topical due to how many Chicagoans live all over

And it will get worse with Messi coming
And now the Miami Marlins in MLB are doing well, and will likely be in the post season, further diminishing the Panthers' miraculous spring of '23.

The Panthers' conference final banner raising in October will be in obscurity, against the Marlins in the playoffs.

It took the Panthers all those years to become somewhat relevant there since their last Cup Final, only to have Messi sign during the Final and the Heat also on their miraculous run...and now the Marlins suddenly on the map! The Panthers just can't win, literally and figuratively.

Oh, and the Miami Marlins just swept the Red Sox at Fenway Park this week, 3-0. Yes, too many south Florida teams stomping on Boston teams -- in Boston -- in the past six weeks or so!

Again we’re seeing the consequences of not marketing your stars
