Before worrying about Ladd and Boychuk, who do NYI really want to protect?

Forwards
Bailey
Barzal
Beauvillier
Lee (if resigned)

Defenders
Leddy
Pulock
Toews

Maybes?
Ho-Sang
Vande Sompel
Wotherspoon

Exempt:
Bellows
Dobson
Soderstrom
Sorokin
Wahlstrom

If Ladd has to be protected, this throws a wrench in things. If not, it's easy - do 4 and 4, protect Boychuk if necessary (otherwise pick your next favorite D prospect or Ho-Sang), job done. We'd probably lose one of Ho-Sang, Vande Sompel, or Wotherspoon, which you live with.

Who knows what Pelech becomes however. If his play continues to improve or stay close he will be the player taken IMHO.

That means NYI's management of this is really very easy.

Overall if you look. The teams who had the hardest time last year now have the easiest the next time around. St. Louis and Florida went from being probably the 1st and 2nd worst while the rangers who had it very easy will have a very tough choice this time

I think Pelech was one of the guys who the team didn't want to lose last time. I think there's a very good chance that we protect him - especially if he continues to develop and takes even a small step forward this year. Plus, after this year, he'll be under team control for the following 3 years with the first two at $1.6m cap hit. That's pretty good if he continues to improve.

is 2019/20 realistic? Bettman said that nothing is for certain yet, at the draft. i get the feeling that it will be the year after (2020/21).

different dynamic, for sure. now Bellows and Soderstrom will need to be protected.

Not going to bother thinking about it until it gets closer and becomes official. Too many things can change.
