Just wanted to start a thread on how and what it means to the Islanders.

As an open Q - Does this mean that Greiss, Clutter, Boychuck or Ladd get unprotected and or contract can be dropped?

This is another reason why this "reboot" is coming at a good time, and why it is incredibly stupid to buy anyone out at the moment. Because all 1st and second year players are exempt and no one on the current roster will have a NMC, Lou can protect players in a way that directs Seattle to likely take a bad contract without having to give up draft picks.

Further, because the Islanders will be in position to make trades, add salary and protect players they can take advantage of anyone that was in our position last time around. Anyone with two good goaltenders could be targets, teams with many good defensemen (Carolina, Nashville). This lines up with my belief that Lou is looking at a one-two year turnaround with this being a transitional year and 20-21 getting back to being a 100pt team.

I'm a little out of the loop on this story, but was it confirmed a Seattle franchise will be established for the 2020 season?

Have to find out the rules for the next expansion draft. Most likely the same for the Vegas draft but you never know.

Couldn't agree more. The other thing waiting does is something a lot of people don't talk about much. The NHL has been dominated by the same handful of teams and players for a while. Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Ovechkin. Those guys will be three years older and past their prime by the time our next wave is ready to compete. The deadly 1-2 punches other teams in our division have won't be as potent anymore (not saying they'll suck).

I am fairly certain that Bettman previously stated for $650 million (up from Vegas' $500 million entry fee), Seattle would want the same expansion draft rules as Vegas received.

That's a great point. JT will be a bad contract by then too, he's slow. A lou rebuild + a little bit of draft lottery hockey gods good karma and we are in good shape by the time belmont is ready.

Just based on out roster right now:

Barzal
Beauvillier
Lee
Bailey
Eberle
Ho-Sang
Cizikas

Leddy
Pulock
Toews

Lehner

You wouldn't even have to protect Cizikas, who would have 1 year left on his contract. They would be left with players that have 1 year left on their contracts, cap dumps and scraps. Imagine who Toronto, Winnipeg, Tampa and Nashville would have to leave unprotected or trade. That's where Lou will really make hay.

It’s gonna be a rough few years in Seattle because the fans expectations there are probably too high because of what Vegas just did. Outside of a miracle they won’t come close to anything like that. Also if you look at the projections no decent goalies look to really be available in the 2020 class so no MAF is just going to fall into their lap

Boychuk has a NMC so he'd be in there over Leddy unfortunately. Barzal I think is still exempt since he'll have 1 year left on his ELC so they could always do the 4F/4D/1G and protect:
Beavullier
Bailey or Cizikas
Komarov (M-NTC) - not sure if he can be exposed
Ladd (NTC)

Boychuk (NMC)
Leddy
Pulock
Toews

Greiss

Thankfully Lou has alot of guys to re-up after the season so you don't have to worry about them touching Lee, Eberle, Beavullier, Ho-Sang, Lehner

Boychuk's NMC becomes a modified NTC after next season, he would no longer be have to be automatically protected.

Boychuk, Komarov, and Ladd could all be exposed. We have no NMC's after next season so we are actually in good shape. Seattle can choose from our crap.
So then it gets tricky as to what crap to protect and what to let float. Keep (Leddy, Pulock, Toews and Mayfield or Pelech) and 4 Forwards (Beauvillier, Cizikas, Bailey and ???). Just about everyone else is either a RFA/UFA or just downright not worth a roster spot.

If it's as being reported and thus in 2020, Barzal would have to be protected.

I would guess we'd go 7+3 since we don't really have valuable D. If Pelech and Toews both become good enough we'd need to keep them, then that's a problem I'm good with.

There has been alot of talk that Seattle will be the next team brought into the league. If they come in at the soonest it will be for the 2019-2020 season. The speculation is that they would use the same rules as the Vagas draft. I have found the rules;

Protected Lists

* Clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the Expansion Draft:
a) Seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender
b) Eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender
* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
Player Exposure Requirements

* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:
i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
ii) Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.
* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection by the League.

Who do we protect and how does everything change with Pajama Boys departure?
