Oh god, here we go with the comparisons like Crosby. Where was he picked again? Number 8? Also, want to know who else is right around that range for size and height? Joseph Gambardella.

Want to look at the last 20 years of #8 overalls and look at success rates?

Someone already did for ya:

1997- BOS: Sergei Samsonov / LW / NHL / GP-888 G-235 A-336 P-571
1998- CHI: Mark Bell / LW / NHL / GP-450 G-87 A-95 P-182
1999- NYI: Taylor Pyatt / LW / NHL / GP-859 G-140 A-140 P-280
2000- TBL: Nikita Alexeev / RW / NHL / GP-159 G-20 A-17 P-37
2001- CBJ: Pascal Leclaire / G / NHL / GP-173 W-61 L-76 OTL/T-15
2002- MIN: Pierre-Marc Bouchard / LW / NHL / GP-593 G-110 A-246 P-356
2003- ATL: Braydon Coburn / D / NHL / GP-778 G-43 A-147 P-190
2004- CBJ: Alexandre Picard / LW / NHL / GP-67 G-0 A-2 P-2
2005- SJS: Devin Setoguchi / RW / NHL / GP-516 G-131 A-130 P-261
2006- PHX: Peter Mueller / C / NHL / GP-297 G-63 A-97 P-160
2007- BOS: Zach Hamill / C / NHL / GP-20 G-0 A-4 P-4
2008- PHX: Mikkel Bodker / RW / NHL / GP-544 G-94 A-157 P-251
2009- DAL: Scott Glennie / RW / NHL / GP-1 G-0 A-0 P-0
2010- ATL: Alexander Burmistrov / C / NHL / GP-324 G-35 A-60 P-95

2012- PIT: Derrick Pouliot / D / NHL / GP-67 G-2 A-12 P-14
2013- BUF: Rasmus Ristolainen / D / NHL / GP-273 G-25 A-85 P-110
2014- TOR: William Nylander / RW / NHL / GP-103 G-28 A-46 P-74

2017- BUF: Casey Mittelstadt / C / USHL / GP-26 G-15 A-17 P-32

23% chance of getting an impact player with that pick, if we're following trends surrounding that pick.
2016 - Sergachev
2015 - Meier
2014 - Ehlers
2013 - Horvat
2012 - Trouba
2011 - Hamilton
2010 - Granlund

Thats 9th overall in those years. Thats 7 straight years of very good players.

So Keith Gretzky is going to make the most important trade for the Oilers future if they trade the pick at the draft.

I'm sure he will have help from MacT, Howson, and Lowe.
We have an amateur head scout as interim GM who worked most of the year scouting prospects and in all likelihood does not trust his pro scouting staff due to the terrible decisions that have occured over the past few years. I find it highly unlikely he is unloading that pick for a pro level player if anything.

 Right. Cause hogging all the draft picks has worked out so well.
You should submit your name to the Oilers for consideration.

Lol @ this kind of mindset.

Are there seriously people who want to trade this pick when

a). One of Dach/Cozens/Turcotte/Zegras will almost certainly be available

b). You consider our cap situation, alongside the upcoming expansion draft concerns.

And he'll be at 8, why?

Why do players fall every year ? Draisaitl was consider a reach for us . I remember the shit storm on how we should have pick Strome or Bennett .

K Dach just scored . He will look good in Oilers silk . McDavid , Draisaitl , RNH , Dach . McLeod and others gives us serious centre depth and with that sooner or later another team comes a calling and would be willing to over pay . Plus maybe we don't/unable to sign RNH

McDavid
Dach
McLeod

is a solid top nine centre depth ....IF DEVELOP RIGHT !!!

At least half of those guys will bust or take their time becoming role players.

You have a lot of faith in this organization's overall. That's admirable. Why didn't we pick Sergachev in 2016? It's the same group there now, less Chia who wanted to take JP at 4 overall, right?

Will never forget how annoying Patrick Thoresen celebration was after scoring that meaningless winner was that kicked us up from 5th to 6th last.

Damn, I think that was a win vs the flames too wasn't it?

Pretty sure Smid scored to win that game for us. SMID, the guy who scored like 2 goals a season.

Think it was this game

Edmonton Oilers - Calgary Flames - April 7th, 2007

Smid tied it up

Thoresen's stupid face celebrating the GWG is honestly burned in my memory.

But hey, I guess if he didn't do that, no Hall, no Nuge, no Yak, no McDavid, no _____. Butterfly effect and all that :)

So, I guess Thank you Thoresen! For setting in motion the great 12 years that followed your pointless GWG, lol.

Never mind man. He's one of those 'draft picks over all' fans.
They come out of the woodwork at this time of the year, fantasy lineups in hand.

So now that Keith Gretzky’s “plan” to fix this team fell apart (didn’t win the lottery) what’s he gonna do now??

That is revisionist history half of this board would of wanted all of management fired if we didnt pick Puljujarvi. He was literally the consensus pick at 3 and was considered in another tier from the players below him. People were arguing more over why he wasnt as good as Laine or Matthews than why he wasnt in another tier from those below him.

Realistically good players are picked every year and we should have a shot at getting a player who will be very good as in a top 6 guy.

Yes you can keep bringing up past drafts but there has been a regime change in the NHL. It is no longer clutch and hold or needing to be a big physical presence with the odd small guy. But now it isnt really a detriment if you are 5'10 to 5'11 and have some speed and elusiveness. The list posted literally is filled with a bunch of guys who do not fit the new NHL which is why they didnt have what it takes or are no longer around. The entertainment value of a high skill fast paced game forces the game to stay this way or continue to focus on skill above all else so the players who are picked at the top reflect that.

Sure we may get a guy who will bust and it will suck but with the expansion draft coming the only way trading this pick makes any sense is if we are targetting a Kyle Connor, Ehlers, etc where you blow a few assets for a very high cornerstone piece that is surefire in your top 6 or top pair for a very long time.

You do know 30/30 teams would of picked Puljujarvi there right? Seems like you are all about hindsight being 20/20.

Why didn't we draft Kucherov first in 2011, what a bunch of morons running this place.

Not with an impending expansion draft and our cap crunch.

Trading the pick makes zero sense
If it was Hughes, I was obviously arguing for trading it. But that pick held a lot more value. Getting multiple ELC players type value. Pick 8? Nah. Keep it.

Because if it’s not a top 2 pic we have no faith in this organization to get it right.

Yup. Keeping it is obvious.

I actually have faith, well as much as is reasonable for an Oiler fan that Keith will make the right pick. He’s got a decent eye for talent.
