Blackhawks never had a Chief Wahoo. They should be in the clear.

But in this day and age, who knows.

What about the Canucks and Seahawks logos which are native art based?

first Washington of the NFL, now Cleveland of MLB.

Atlanta mlb, Chicago NHL on watch.
Were Indian artists hired to make those two logos?

Utilizing native art isn’t the same as taking on a nickname that’s considered derogatory in some circles. The Coyotes are going back to their original kachina logo with is based on the southwest native cultures, and AFAIK it’s never been questioned by any of the local bands.

There's a difference between using stuff inspired by locals and just trivializing them.

In the case of Atlanta, for years, things were... iffy.

Though, on a side note, and not to diminish or be insensitive, but I always thought the original Seahawks logo looked depressed.

The whole retro jersey reveals showed me that the NHL and Hawks are starting to get worried about the Inidna head logo in professional sports.

One would have expected a strong defense of the heritage and strong resistance to pressure to have it changed. NOPE, instead it's pretty much "I guess if they say we should change it I'll understand". Way to roll over and die, good way to run your life.

I should not be surprised, this is what happens when the participation trophy generation comes of age

Who cares? It's not like you as a fan stand to lose money or anything else of significance if they change it. Changing the name doesn't rob you of your memories or connection to the team's history. You could even pretend they're still called the Blackhawks and wear the old jersey if you want.

Name should not be changed, end of story. Changing the name of an Original Six team would embarrass the NHL beyond redemption. I really don't subscribe to all this "change the name" non-sense but as someone who has been a hockey fan my entire life, I would not be comfortable with them changing the name or logo. I don't care what Blackhawks fans say, but I'm saying this as a life-long hockey fan.

Feel free to become a Blackhawks fan so you can die on this "we're never changing shit!" hill. Otherwise, please mind your own business.

Don’t know where this stupid narrative is coming from literally no hawks fan wants the name change.

I don't have any narrative, that was the entire point of what I said. I made zero comment on Blackhawks fan perspective. Don't draw assumptions.

You’re probably right.

That said - I hope Blackhawk fans voice their opinion on this for they will be the ones to lose out on a classic logo with a great team history.

They can easily keep the Blackhawks name and change the logo to a hawk or a fighter jet. The Blackhawks are lucky in that standpoint unlike the Washington Football Team and the Cleveland Baseball franchise.

There's a substantial argument to be made that appropriating Native art to sell branded corporate merchandise, especially in an enterprise that has zero Native ownership, is just as trivializing and derogatory as doing the exact same thing with a nickname.

I don't necessarily agree with where that argument is leading, but the internal logic is the same in both cases.

Is it the name, the logo, or both that the Blackhawks are going to have to give up?

True, though arguably the biggest problem here is that there is no adequate Native American involvement, as kachina dolls in the form they are known to most whites emerged as merchandise sold to tourists anyway.
