Mikael Samuelsson was a righty. He was a second line guy.

I guess "consistent" is arbitrary on my part, I was thinking more of a fixture on the team like ~6 seasons+ , which makes no sense because Lang was only here for a fraction of that arbitrary number in my brain and I cited him as an example

I also don't really view Samuelsson in that light, which again is arbitrary because he produced decently here and then really well for a couple seasons in Vancouver, but I guess I thought of him more as clearly middle 6/ solid depth winger where as I was thinking of Shanny and Lang as sure fire 1st line guys when they were at their peaks

That is arbitrary. I mean, really though... how many RHS top line guys are there? It's not a really common handedness for hockey, as being a RHS

I gave it a four. Like every year we took some guys I liked and past over several others that I really wanted. Overall I think the balance of the draft was pretty good. Draper ignored my wish list, but I have reason to be optimistic with a good number of these kids. More importantly, we did not take anyone that I did not want going into the draft. I think we did really well with our top three picks. I kind of liked Viro the couple of times I watched him and I like what Sebrango brings. I know a couple of guys who have coached Stange and Aucoin. I personally would not have drafted Aucoin but I was told he was a great skater and very advanced defensively (especially one-on-one). Again, not my cup of tea but it is never an awful idea to take high-end skaters late. I was told that Stange was super draftable and has more offensive upside than many think. Bednar was on my short list of goalie wants and I like Cotton where we got him, even though I am skeptical about his capacity to improve his skating.

We live in a crazy world at the moment and I just hope for the sake of these kids that we can get them into good developmental situations over the next year and can keep them on track in that regard.

I'm really pleased. Raymond was my top choice at forward, by a good margin, and so I'm really happy. 5/5 on that front.

Only way it could feasibly be better is if they somehow traded back into round 1. But I'm not going to deduct points for that.

I'm changing my vote to a 4 from a 3. I'm actually pretty happy with this haul. Still can't believe that Stange guy in the 4th round, but... everybody loves Raymond, Wallinder has already grown on me after watching a bunch of video, and I think he's got #3 D potential. Niederbach is more skilled than I believed, and I honestly thought Hanas was a grinder, but was I wrong lol he's also apparently a skill player who was playing 2nd PP and 2nd line, so that explains his "so-so" stats last year. Still think he would have been there with a 3rd, but I've grown to accept that pick as well.

Pornman thinks 5/11 skaters the Wings drafted have average foot speed (currently), Raymond and Niederbach included.

Pronman is the perfect example of a guy who vastly overrates straight line speed. Give me a player with fantastic edges and can get from a stand still to top speed in a blink, even if the top speed is average. Most loose pucks are going to be won by the guy with the quickest reaction and most explosive first step.

Is he related to this guy?

I find it really interesting read through these comments and seeing how displeased people are about late round picks like they somehow have a very informed opinion on what these players will be or who should have been taken in these spots. And then on top of that some people seem to be weighing these picks about equally to the early round picks. Like how do you give an F for a 6th round pick lol. That blows my mind.

My take:

I gave it a 4, but I feel better about it than an 8/10. Maybe not a 9/10, but I'm pretty excited.

Raymond was the guy I wanted at #4. Wallinder and Niederbach seem like really good picks in the 2nd round based on their upside and how they fit in with the current organizational dynamic.

I REALLY wanted Robins at #55. I didn't know anything about Hanas coming in so hopefully he is the right guy there. If there is one pick I was 'disappointed' with, it would be this one.

As far as the rest of the picks, I don't know enough but I like the logic surrounding them. I think the nepotism cries are funny also. We're talking about a 7th rounder here who is by all accounts a high quality kid who will have a very fond attachment to this organization and will probably have more of a drive to get all the way through than most others will.

Finally, I wished both times that Calgary moved back in the first round that it was Detroit on the other end. I really would have liked to scoop Zary up for that price. Oh well.

It likely would have cost us a 2nd and I think Wallinder was our pick pretty much from the late teens on, based on some of Hakan's comments. I think when they saw Mukhamadullin go they knew that Wallinder wasn't on many team's radar.

Also it's crazy to me that the Avs took Barron in the 1st. He was a borderline DND given his questionable play and health concerns. Wish him all the best but he shouldn't have been a 1st rounder.

Ya, possibly. They went 22 > 24 for pick 80. Going 24 > 32 would have had to be a better pick, you'd think, especially if they were just trading back because they were quite certain they were going to get Zary anyways.

I feel exactly the same regarding Robins for the record. Any yes, I absolutely agree that you should give greater weight to the earlier picks when assessing an NHL draft as that is where your more impactful players are likely to come from.

A day later I still feel pretty good about this draft. I think we will get more than one NHL player out of this crop. I want to say that we will get at least three NHL-ers, but maybe even four or five. Am I crazy for thinking that?

Yes.

I think 2 or 3. Player picked outside the first 2 rounds rarely make the NHL. Every one of our picks have areas of concern. In the end, I'm thinking just Raymond and Wally.

I think Raymond, Wallinder, and Niederbach seem pretty promising. Next tier down I think is Viro. Viro might just need size though... The other decent possibilities (third tier down for me) are Hanas and Bednar, but I think those two have a ways to go.
