Honestly is there anything worth salvaging from this team besides Faulk and Hanifin? I'm not sure if Lindholm or Skinner or Rask are the guys to build your team around up front.

Just a said state of affairs for this team.

IMO Lindholm has a strong chance of developing into a JStaal-caliber core player and a decent chance of going to the next step and being a guy you could feel good about having on the top line. So yeah, I'd keep him as a core player alongside Faulk and Hanifin.

Rask... well, he would be our next best forward prospect after Lindholm so I'd see him as a long term investment. Not a core player necessarily but someone to hold onto as long as he's cost-controlled and producing.

Skinner strikes me as a good complimentary player, kind of like Jussi Jokinen before he started sucking. Not in terms of style of course, but in the sense that he's someone who can make a good team better. But who can't make a bad team good. So no, I wouldn't consider him a core player at this point.

Sure there is.

Faulk, Hanifin, Pesce, Rask, Lindholm, Slavin. Probably Skinner (although he needs to start finding the back of net) and Nestrasil as well. Maybe guys like Rask aren't who you "build around", but you still need guys like him on the roster and these guys are all young enough to still be able to develop and contribute.

Or could this be the start of dominoes falling in terms of trades?

It would be something of a relief to see them start treating this like a lost season now, rather than waiting till March to make that same decision. If there are veteran guys who can be moved for good value, there's no sense in waiting for them to get injured and have a terrible season before taking them to market.

Yep, if I'm RF, I'd be peddling Eric to get the best offer out there between now and the deadline. Same goes for Hainsey and Ward (although they have no value), Liles and maybe even Versteeg. The latter 2 probably would be better suited to deadline deals though.

Maybe I am just in a negative mood today, but that 'core' has non playoff team written all over it. Even adding Hayden Fleury to the list doesn't do much. The D may be ok if the young kids continue to develop, but the forward core is a bit thin.

But damn excited it did....he was a boiling pimple of bad decisions and ineffectiveness last night.

Could also be an issue with his conditioning. Although, his play is also a justifiable reason.

Build a solid D core and fill out the forward lines with a balanced FA approach. Similar to Nashville or St Louis. Then as the D core develops draft or trade for young forwards to bring some flair and high-end skill to the team (ie: Forsberg, Tarasenko, Schwartz, etc.).

The two positions you will almost never find outside of the Draft are #1C and top-pairing D. Canes are fortunate to have a 2-3 potential top-pairing D and a possible #1C in Lindholm. Add Matthews to that dynamic and the Canes could become very scary in short order.

What the Canes can't do is continue to pay a couple players an insane % of their budget. Eric Staal making almost as much as every forward not named Skinner or J Staal combined is a recipe for disaster for a budget team.

Package Ward with something. I don't know what that something would be though.

I never said that list of players was the 'core'. I responded to your post that asked "Is there anything WORTH SALVAGING from this team besides Faulk and Hanifin?" and the answer is YES, there are others, which I listed. That doesn't mean they are all core players, but teams need good core players and good role players as well. Of course it's not a playoff team with just those guys I listed, but that's a totally different question than you asked. Whether they keep 2 players from this roster (which is totally ridiculous of course) or 10 players from this roster, they still need to add talent to be a playoff team.

They've got a good foundation now on defense and a lot of picks (and maybe even some prospects from deadline deals) coming up. Use that to fill the forward ranks, and down the road UFA's to augment it further.

Chicago got the core of their defense (Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson) in place first then added Toews and Kane via draft then got guys like Hossa, Ladd etc..via UFA and trade.

While Murphy wasn't great last night, neither was the majority of the team. I'm not a huge fan of Murphy, but seems a bit surprising to call him up and send him down after 1 game. Why even call him back up if you plan on doing that because it's not like they don't know what they will get from him. Maybe it's simply because he can go up and down freely without waivers and they want to shake things up?

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I thought you guys might be interested in news about Pitkanen. There was an article about him today in a newspaper here in Finland. He has been practicing with the FEL team Kärpät this and the previous season, and recently there have talks between him and the team about him playing some games this season.

According to the article, his recovery has made progress and he's starting to have good strength and conditioning, especially mentioning that his skating stride is still looking good. Obviously it's still a long way for him to return to professional hockey and the years of not playing have taken a toll that might be too much to recover from, but encouraging news nonetheless.

That is great to hear about Joni! Hated the way he went out and certainly wish all the best to him in his efforts to get back into hockey! Thanks for the update!

Versteeg and Nash maybe the extra forwards tonight, per Chip and Ward in net.
