A small but industrious speedster that always seeks to be engaged in the play. Skates very well and has the shiftiness to avoid being rubbed out. Isn't afraid of physical play, but knows his role as an offensive catalyst and plays to his strengths. Excellent hands and hockey sense. Only knock is his size, but that doesn't impede his compete level. Possesses the fundamental skills and natural goal scoring instincts that make the players around him better.

I hoped to get an RD this draft, in fact, hoped we'd get two of them, but instead we loaded up on more LDs. This round is probably too late to get a D. There's enough of a premium put on defensemen that it's rare for anyone good to last to round 7. Hope we get a small, skilled winger.

Elite Prospects:

A small but industrious speedster that always seeks to be engaged in the play. Skates very well and has the shiftiness to avoid being rubbed out. Isn’t afraid of physical play, but knows his role as an offensive catalyst and plays to his strengths. Excellent hands and hockey sense. Only knock is his size, but that doesn’t impede his compete level. Possesses the fundamental skills and natural goal scoring instincts that make the players around him better.

Future Considerations:

Ronning, the son of former NHLer Cliff, is an offensive-minded forward just like his father. He is an explosive, wide-based skater who is able to quickly drive lanes and exploit mistakes on the ice. When he sees an opening, he uses his powerful first step to turn on the jets and jump to the attack, showing a great compete level around loose pucks. He complements this speed and shiftiness with great hands and solid intelligence. Ronning is a slippery player who can operate with the puck at high speed.

Could someone help me out on what being an industrious speedster means?

I'm not really concerned about getting a RD. Most of these guys are 3+ years out. The team complexion changes immensely from year to year. For all we know, LD could be a severe need when these guys come along. I'm fine with whoever they feel is BPA.

Exactly who I wanted (see above): a talented small winger. His dad played 17 years in the NHL. Love this pick given that it's round 7.

At some point, we'll need RDs. We have McDonagh, Skjei, Graves, Day and Tarmo on the left. We have McIlrath and some marginal prospects like Zborovskiy, Hughes and Calle. We need to add talent to the RD one way or the other, be it trade, draft or signings (UFA or UDFA).

So many people here are furious in Vancouver, twitter, hf boards, reddit are all beyond pissed off we did not draft Ronning here in Vancouver.

This kid has incredible heart and determination, he is the most sure bet small player 2 make the NHL, watch.

Yeah, but that could always be addressed through trade like you said. Stockpile your assets then when the time comes to address it, you make the move. I just hate leaving potential talent on the table in the draft to try and address a need.

Cliff Ronning was one hell of a hockey player. Very few small players were able to survive in his era. With all the hacking and slashing and crosschecking. The ice wasn't open up to the opposition blue line so little guys could be hemmed in a lot easier. Ronning had a ton of skill and he was one gritty little **** with a never say die attitude. If his son is like him we could have a player here.

I agree. I know absolutely nothing about the pick, but from what I'm reading, he's the perfect kind of small player to get in the new NHL.

Could he be a Zuccarello/Marchand type is the question that is posed to us.

Maybe they'll try for RD in FA since it's an immediate need that wouldn't be addressed in the draft anyway for another half a decade.

Some teams get good RD's in FA. Tampa Bay got one a few years back that'd fix most of our current woes.

I play ball hockey with him and his dad in Vancouver and it's hilarious to see how competitive they are against each other. I hope to see him make the team for you guys down the road and succeed.

I did the math to check if it's possible he was conceived during the 1994 Finals, but he definitely was not.
