Of course he is GM of the year ... Some people recognize talent when they see it.

Islanders' Lou Lamoriello named NHL general manager of the year

Lou Lamoriello of the New York Islanders is the winner of the NHL's Jim Gregory general manager of the year award.

The league announced Saturday night that Lamoriello finished ahead of fellow finalists Julien BriseBois of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Jim Nill of the Dallas Stars. Colorado's Joe Sakic was fourth and Vegas' Kelly McCrimmon fifth in voting by GMs, league executives and media members after the second round of the playoffs.

Lamoriello's Islanders are in the Eastern Conference finals thanks to several moves he made in free agency in the summer of 2019 and at the February trade deadline. He signed free-agent goaltender Semyon Varlamov and forward Derick Brassard and traded for center Jean-Gabriel Pageau and defenseman Andy Greene.

"We've had tremendous results from our players throughout this playoff series," Lamoriello said. "All you have to do is just go up and down the stat sheet and look at the different types of players and different positional players who've come forward and been a key part of winning, and that's just great to see. That's how you win: When you have a team that there's a different player each and every night that can come forward and players being happy for each other."

"Lou has been in the game a long time," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "[He] understands the person really well. It's not necessarily can he shoot a puck, can he pass a puck. There's the other stuff. And that's where I think Lou's been really exceptional at when he looks at certain people."

It's funny how the Islanders mortgaged the future and got saved by the pandemic, while their healthy team dropped more in points than Toronto did this year, and they're winner of GM of the year, while this place can't stop talking about firing Dubas.

If you look at the votes and timing, this was a "who made the conference final" award. Nothing more.

Sakic should have gotten it hands down... Burakovsky, Kadri, Makar draft, Rantanen draft, Duchene deal (girard, 2nd overall), nichushkin.... etc etc list goes on.

The Islanders have had a great playoff run, but they also would not have even made the playoffs if the Covid crisis hadn't brought the regular season to a premature end

The NYI had a higher winning points% than our Leafs on the regular season that is why the Leafs were ranked #8 and to face CBJ #9 and NYI #7

Penguins (5) vs. Canadiens (12)Canadiens win series 3-1
Hurricanes (6) vs. Rangers (11)Hurricanes win series 3-0
Islanders (7) vs. Panthers (10)Islanders win series 3-1
Maple Leafs (8) vs. Blue Jackets (9)Blue Jackets win series 3-2

I love all the pedestrian partisans that can’t even acknowledge he deserved to win this award, says more about your warped reality you’ve painted yourself into than any commentary of substance.

I don’t hate Lou, it isn’t either/or with Dubas, he did a decent job turning our franchise around and made some good moves, the obvious errors, but he is a legendary GM for a reason and no mediocre commentator here, in his basement, changes that objective fact.

Back to the circus....

Lou
Lost his best player and franchise player to Mr "he is runing hockey" Dubas. Paid up a horrific contract to a player who can barely play hockey in Komarov. Gave up a fortunate for a decent player only in Pageau. Continuee to lose out on good players like Hall, Panerin etc...
Hired a great coach who fell into his lap in Trotz.
Only making the playoffs because of great goaltending and a stoppage this season.

Dubas
Landed one of the top FA's in history in Tavares at a reasonable dollar amount. Landed a top pair stud in Muzzin and kept him for a 3rd line prospect, a huge question mark in Durzi, and a late 1st.
Forced to give up a first because of the wonderful work by king Lou.
A steal of a deal in the Kapanen trade. Fantastic drafting and kept a prospect pool respectable despite tied up with lack of picks and success.
Improved the team defensively more then King Lou ever did.

Yet we have people on this board making a thread of how Dubas is horrible, and Lou is the most amazing GM the world has ever seen?

Good for Lou on winning the award.
Now what does this have to do with the Leafs? He left two seasons ago.
If Babs win Coach of the Year next year? Should we care?
