I'd like to propose a rule where a player over 40 is not eligible to be checked. Why? There are very few older players and it's a shame when a legend like Jagr is essentially banished despite wanting to continue playing. There should be some level of consideration for an older player just not having the physical body of a 18 year old. Something that incentivizes older players to stay longer in the NHL if they want.

So they wear a special jersey like the orange ones in practice when they are coming back from injury and have no contact rule. So they cannot be checked.

Do you think this would be a fair incentive or do you think it would give too much advantage?

Lmao what ?

Threads just keep getting better and better. More interesting than debating the hart I guess.

But yeah sure give them a non contact jersey . Players under 5'9 get them too and women

Unsure if this is a joke thread BUT:

IF you were going to create an incentive for teams to carry older players it would probably have to do with contracts not the actual play. For example, players over 3x years old who have played x amount of seasons in the NHL can have contracts that don't count on the cap or something similar. Just spit balling, don't shit on me for a rule thought up on the spot.

Pretty simple though, you can either play or you can't regardless of age. You don't change gameplay rules to suit someone who isn't good enough anymore.

They already do that. Old players bonuses dont count against the cap until they hit them like a rookie.

If they hit them and they are over the cap its bounced to the next year. Same as rookie contracts but the team decides on what they have to hit more than for a rookie where its pretty set up .

Terrific idea. I also think there should be a rule that makes it a 2 minute penalty if a goalie stops a shot from anyone over 40. Heck make it 5 minute penalty to come within 10 feet of a player over 50, and 10 minute misconduct if you dare look into the steely eyes of someone over 60.

Crap imaging all the HHOF players coming out of retirement. It'll be a boom. Bobby Hull coming back to shuffle-board in another 50 goal season. The headlines. Gretzky puts it 5-hole 99 times, then goes out to play hockey. Then they could change the name of the league to the Nonagenarian Hoakey League, and their slogan will be "OOOOH My hip."

Old people rules to keep them playing .

What is a Performance Bonus?

A Performance Bonus can be given to a player in addition to their salary. Performance bonuses are only paid to the player if they meet the requirements as defined by the bonus. Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit. Not all players are eligible for Performance Bonuses, and to receive a bonus within their contract, a player must meet one of the following criteria:
  1. The player is on an entry-level contract.
  2. The player has signed a one-year contract and is over 35 years old.
  3. The player has signed a one-year contract after returning from a long-term injury (has played 400 or more games, and spent 100 or more days on the Injured Reserve in the last year of their most recent contract).

What is a 35-plus contract?

If a player signs a multi-year contract and is age 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to the year of the effective contract), the players individual cap hit counts against the teams cap hit regardless of whether, or where, the player is active. However, there is one circumstance in which there is a cap hit reduction, a team will receive a $100,000 relief off of the teams salary cap hit, if a player is playing in the minor leagues after the first year of their contract.

The 35+ rule was introduced in the 2005 CBA and was intended to prevent teams from burying veteran players in the AHL, or from front-loading contracts to draw players to signing with them. One result of the rule is that it has lead to teams signing short one or two year contracts with veteran players, to prevent the possibility of being stuck with the players full cap hit if they are injured or unable to produce.

On a related note, over the previous couple years there has been significant confusion as to whether a buyout does or does not receive a cap benefit for 35-plus contract. The most recent understanding is that bought out 35-plus contracts do not receive a cap hit benefit

Off-season thread already? Great idea! Along with this, I'd like to propose that goalies that catch with their right hand get double the glove size, it'd only be fair for the sake of variety.

I think players over 40 should be allowed to use a Chelicart

Weaker, smaller and not very skilled players should also be allowed to wear those jerseys, so they could keep playing longer.

Also, anyone who didn't get a shot on goal during regulation, is allowed to take a penalty shot after final buzzer and the goal counts even if it's not converted.

This is age discrimination.

Instead I think teams should be able to designate three unhittable players on their team for each game
