I'm done with Severson. Only time he should touch the ice is with a 2 goal lead. The rest of the time keep him in the dressing room away from the ice so no coach is tempted to put him on. He needs to learn defence. It's his position. Stop pinching. Stop coasting. Just stop. This isnt an over reaction to this game. I've been down on him all year. How many losses can be attributed to him this year. 4 now? That's a playoff spot.

Oh come on man. He's our best defenseman. It's not even close. Sure did he make a few mistakes that really hurt us tonight? Yes, but that doesn't mean he sucks.

I don't understand why every single mistake Severson makes gets scrutinized while the vets like Moore, Quincey, LoveJoy can make several mistakes a game and it just goes unnoticed.

Does Severson need to clean up his act and limit some turnovers? Yes. But he also is one of the few legit defenseman we have.

Goalies have little to no chance on a backdoor play.

It's like when all those clowns ripped Marty for allowing that goal tying goal to Carolina in game 7 because "It went through his legs". It went through his legs as he was sliding over. Now the Staal game winner and Ruutu goal in the first minute were bad, and might have been the only stoppable goals he allowed all series. The amount of heat he took for the Jokinen goal was not justified though.

You guys can say whatever you want. This team doesn't have the determination to make it to the playoffs. It's a pain to watch this team play all the time. I wish the players played with more heart but theres nothing we can do or the coach. I will always be a Devils fan no matter what. This is a point of time where our team is weak and we must support them. There's not much we can do. In the future they will be stronger. We just have to bear with what we have now. I know its hard.

The coaching staff sucks. Flat out ****ing sucks. The PK sucks, the PP is actually some what looking better, but how long did it take for these oblivious ****wits to finally figure out they had to switch things up?

Lets look at how the game was tied with 450 left and the coaching genius of Hynes puts out ****ing Kalinin and his line out there instead of going with Zajacs (henrique and josefsons were on the ice for a bit before Kalinins came out). He coaches so they don't lose, not so they win. Kalinin needs to never see this lineup again. Same with DSP and Helgeson. If Merrill is out for a bit of time, do not use Helgeson. Cammalleri may be putting up points thanks to assists, but he just looks bad.

Noesen looks solid, Zacha looks to be coming along and is playing with a lot of confidence. Hall doesn't seem right. He is no where near as explosive as he was earlier in the year. Would be nice if he started to score as well. Wood is still the most exciting player on this team. Severson, he needs to be more aware of what is going on and know when to go for a hit and when not to. Santini looks okay. We knew he'd hit a rough patch, but he still looks like he belongs in the NHL and doesn't look out of place.

I except them to get manhandled tomorrow.

Another game in which Schneider allows 4 goals and saves under 90% of his saves. This is an alarming problem. Usually more shots = higher save percentage.

There's no way that a goalie's expected SV% at 3 on 3 is 92%. My guess is it's something like 85%. Which is yet another way that this OT warps numbers around the league.

Don't worry, Severson will pay for this. He won't get any power play time next game haha.

He didn't miss the guy on the backdoor though... He's just not cheating and that was a rocket of a shot that beat him. If he cheats then whoever that Flames player is would read it and just beat him clean, then we'd have posts saying how much of a soft goal that was and how Schneider's positioning is terrible. That's a play you need and should expect the team in front of him to prevent, they didn't. It's not his fault.

He said in the post game interview that he did.

Did you see the shot chart tonight? Almost half the shots came from in the slot below the top of the circle.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/calgary-flames-new-jersey-devils-2017020311/

Again the defense is definitely a problem (a horrible offense doesn't help the defense either). Whenever you play guys like Lovejoy, Moore, Quincey who were essentially cast-offs on other teams and expect them to play big roles doesn't help. None of them are dependable defenseman.

But at the same time, stats show that typically when you give up more shots game after game a goalie's save percentage typically increases. It's not all Cory's fault, but he's been very mediocre this year.

Agreed with all of this. Helgeson should NEVER play, that's another indictment on Hynes.

He shouldn't even be on the roster. It's a certifiable crime that he is.

Kalinin shouldn't be either. Guy has less skill than Stephen Gionta, is slower and is not even good defensively. I'm not sure why Hynes and company think he's even good at defense. Because he shut down top lines with Zajac last year? So did Jordin Tootoo the year before that for a period of time LOL.

I wouldn't be averse to scratching him outright tbh, we're back to kid needs a lesson time

My only problem with is it means Helgeson has to play.

He might play anyway, if Hynes and company are too lazy to pick a pen and write down Stollery for tomorrow night though.

If a goalie's save percentage is .920, it generally means that a team will score on him 8 out of every 100 shots. More shots = more goals against.

This is like saying because red came up in roulette in the evenings you were at the casino doesn't mean you should expect that to be the norm. The percentage that red comes up is still 46%.

He took a chance in 3 on 3 and he whiffed on it. If he gets that puck and the Devils come down and score he's a hero. But 3 on 3 is barely hockey and the Devils should probably be bad at it.

The worse play was at 5 on 5 where he was overaggressive on Stajan and got burned

Did we seriously not use Lovejoy in OT? Hynes deserves an A just for that. I don't think he was out there, though he was stuck out there for quite a while in the last minute.

And the constant excuses are even more pathetic.

Don't you realize you're doing the exact same thing in reverse? You complain after every single goal that people find excuses for Cory, but you've been finding excuses to bash him the whole season even on crap that has nothing to do with him. And when I'm saying this as someone that HAS bashed him a majority of the season that's usually a pretty good indicator criticism is jumping the shark now.

If that were to happen, Hynes deserves to get fired. That would be absolutely ridiculous.

Why, it's not like he hasn't scratched the golden boy before. When you do something selfish like pinching in up 3-2 in the third period that deserves a benching. When you compound that in the OT by floating around that's even worse.

They scratch him and who do they put in that will not be hurting the team more than Severson and his **** ups?

Does it really matter? They gave up forty freaking shots to Calgary WITH Severson, how much worse is it going to be without him? The D was so awful I forgot Greene was back.

I do think there are goalies that benefit in their save percentage from seeing more shots.

I felt like Hiller in Anaheim (his first few years there under Carlyle and before his decline) benefitted greatly from it. Mike Smith as well, especially in that 11-12 season.

It seems like Buffalo's goalies are beneficiaries of it as well. Though Anders Nilsson sucked no matter how many shots he was facing in Edmonton and NYI, yet is good on the Sabres this year, so not sure how to explain that one.

If the other choices are Quincey, Severson and Helgeson I'd put Lovejoy at least third on my preference list of who to use in OT sadly, after the disgusting display from 22 and 28 tonight. Maybe second assuming Santini will never get preference over Lovejoy atm.

Bernier's FLUKE .925 season in 13-14 was another season that may have been a product of being inflated due to facing a zillion shots.

Reimer had a season like that the year before too. Though both of them also had garbage seasons in Toronto too.

You can't just bench someone because they made two mental mistakes. Unfortunately for Severson they both led to goals. But what about Lovejoy's countless mistakes game after game. They didn't lead to goals today, but they cost us time that could have been had in the offensive zone. There were 49 chances that Calgary had today. 29 of them came when Lovejoy was on the ice. And this stuff happens every game. Why aren't people screaming for him to be benched.
