Nelson Good Cop, Eakins Bad Cop?

All I saw was Eakins enabling the culture of entitlement. Maybe not intentionally, but he didn't really hold anyone accountable, aside from Yak who he was trying to make his NHL version of Kadri, where he could one day claim he was the reason Yak became a good player and he was a bum before he got the fortune of having Eakins in his life.

No.IMO Nelson was viewed as being a Larry Robinson style coach and too much of a player coach and not tough enough to snap the whip. That is why it is sort of funny in the last 4 years all hell broke lose behing the oiler bench while Nelson was down on the farm minding his own business

If Eakins was a cop he'd be Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons so, no, I don't think this was the case.

Mactavish hired him because he and Lowe thought this team was ready to turn the corner after Tambellini was fired and that Eakins was the guy to get them there instead of Krueger. There was never any other plan. That's why he was given a 4 year deal and that's why Mactavish refused to fire him for as long as he did.

Eakins supported the tank, Nelson doesn't.

Nelson turned a below average AHL team into a mini powerhouse in OKC and continued to do good things with below average prospects. Nelson should have been the hire a year ago.

To me Nelson in like Cooper in Tampa and he has impressed me every game. I say let him coach the rest of the year and sign him if he proves himself

The only thing that sucks is that hell coach us to 5th last or so

I see no way in the world that the Oilers would want Hitchcock. He is too strong of a personality that would take no guff and would clearly state what he wanted. The Oilers front office would hate this and macT as a gm would as well. macT still think's he's a coach and as such will only go for candidates he can manipulate or who will cow tow to him like Eakins or a rookie in the league like Nelson.

Another huge minus among many on mact, he'll be a coach meddler until the day he is fired.

Look at recent coaching history.

Krueger, Eakins - rookies
Quinn, Renney - friends with Tambellini (Canucks). friends with Lowe (Canada)
MacT, Lowe, Low, Burnett - rookie head coaches

The Oilers in the entire history has never hired a coach that wasn't a friend or a rookie. They have never hired a coach based on pure professional resume or that he was the best coaching option available.

Why didn't MacT grab someone from a winning program like Detroit, Boston, Chicago, San Jose? LOL

To top it all off the icing on the cake, Eakins brings all his buddies from that crappy Leafs organization like Will Acton, Keith Acton, Keith Aulie, Ben Scrivens, and that other AHL dude I can't remember. WTF!!

I agree with everything in this thread but perhaps hindsight has erased some of your memory.

He took the Marlies to the finals and lead them to back to back first place finishes in their division.
