You're wrong and even his underlying stats back him as a really good defensive player.

Vegas had a chance to get a top 5 defenceman, of course they would ditch any player on their roster to get him.

Maybe this is all just semantics. I said last night that he is for sure top 40 and quite possibly top 30 among defencemen in the league; a very good acquisition. When somebody said he is a "great defender" I took it to mean what I think of as great-- which is Hall of Fame calibre.

So happy about this pickup.. what a massive swing of emotions this last week. Hopefully he plays out his career here. It's hard watching character guys leave town lol.

I forgot he played with Boeser in Da Beauty League.

Just watched the interview and I already love the guy. Miller has already been such a fantastic addition not only on ice but in that locker room and it seems like Schmidt will be another one of those.

the lockerroom needs more of these types of guys who can bring fun/humour/seriousness all in one. van lost leaderships from marky tanev. maybe schmidt can be that guy that jokes around when guys are having a bad day.

Anyone else think Keith Flint from the Prodigy when you see Nate Schmidt's face?

I know it's a longshot, but you wonder if there's any chance that Brogan Rafferty could end up on the same career path as Nate Schmidt.

Both guys signed as un-drafted free agents out of college hockey by the Caps and the Canucks. Both players listed on Hockey DB as 6', 195. And by comparison, Schmidt's numbers with Hershey in the AHL were pretty pedestrian in the early going. But obviously he improved every year and the Caps hated to lose him in the expansion draft to Vegas. And in his late 20's, he really came into his own as a legit top-four d-man in Vegas.

I really hope the Canucks don't give up on Rafferty until they're sure what they have.

With getting Schmidt do we resign Edler next off season? How does acquing Schmidt (and his 6 million dollar cap hit for five more years) effect our D going forward? We will have Smidt at 6, Myers at 6, and Hughes at (likely?) 8.5. Imo getting Schmidt means it’s highly likely Benning fills out the rest of our D (after the top paid three) with really cheap guys.

Will have to rely on guys like Juolevi, Rathbone, Rafferty, Woo stepping up into these roles. These guys all have decent upside, so it's reasonable to think at least two of them can slot into the lineup in 21-22.

Disagree on this one. Though sure, I can see him slot into the lineup 21-22...as a PP specialist.

It's really going to depend on how OJ and Rathbone and Rafferty are looking come the end of next season (I don't have much faith in Woo). I could see another 1-2 year deal at 3 per I suppose as Edler clearly wants to stay here however we are going to for sure want to save on cap so if there's any opportunity to jettison his money he's gone.

Even though he will be 35 he should still be able to be a very capable 5/6 at that point who can slide into the top 4 as needed. I don't see him aging as poorly as Tanev (who is poised to really fall off I think).
