It’s not surprising to see a step back for Bear and Jones but the timing couldn’t be worse. A real sore spot the past 15 years has been D playing up one or two spots from where they should be. A good 5/6 looks god awful as a 3.

This here is why I would empty the cupboard right now for a top pairing right handed guy. Broberg? Who cares. Pick this year? Most of this class will play less than 30 games, it's going to be impossible to evaluate any of them. Holloway? He's still years away from contributing.

Meanwhile, getting a clear-cut #1 pushes Bear/Barrie down, AND could even make Nurse look like a real defenseman:

FA this summer isn't great. It's basically all the guys who signed one-year deals this past off-season plus Dougie Hamilton. The real bounty is 2022, when Parayko, Risto, Jones, Lindholm, Pulock, Rielly and Klingberg among others all hit UFA. Of course, that list also includes Nurse, so we'll be forced to spend money either way. I also hate the idea of burning two more years off McDrai's contracts and primes, so a trade really is the best (if most expensive) route.
