Here's the easiest way to evaluate a contract. Can you trade Murphy's contract right now? Can you trade Murphy's contract the during year minus an unforseen injury or something bad off the ice. If the answer is YES without a NMC AND giving up other assets to unload his contract, it's a good contract.

IMO, the Hawks can move Murphy's contract rather easily. Hence, it's a good contract. It doesn't what you think of Murphy. It matters how the League values Murphy's contract. That's how you have to look at any UFA signing or extension.

Yes but...if Murphy was our best dman last season our bar was very very low.

Is 80% WAR goid? SHOULD YOU MOT BE OVER 100% WaR to be impacting wins?

If the him being 85% percentile in EV (which I assume they determined from GF -GA at evens is correct then tgat jeansvhebiscin the top 15% of dmen for this which woukd be pretty impactful at evens...

Conversely heisbonly at 50% on the pk which is pure meh andcshoukdcdeduct more from his overall effectiveness .

Still it is tgeceye test and the comparison to Hjalmarsson(where Murphy is left in the dust in terms of shutting down the opps) where his impact trolley is deficient.

Again...Hammer got to loose pucks at the boards and effectively skated/passed / or cleared them out ..Murphy is too slow to get to loose pucks first and is not very good on skating/passing it out or in clearing it out...

Therefore shocking to discover he is too 15% at evens in GF -GA goal differential .

It woukd seem lijevthevooos shouldcscore more when hevusvon ...OR thecstat us skewed because we mange to score more when he is on vs. When our other D are on...not tgat his up in the stats because he does not have many points....rather that he must have been on a kit at evens when Kanecand D-Catclinecwas on...

Anyway stats can be skewed by other factors besides one's own efforts...But slow is slow and failing to get to pucks firstcand to get it outta our zone fast, that you cannot hide from.

Meh he would be a 3rd pairing guy in a contender, too much money for a 3rd pairing guy as this team needs to be a contender at one point. Not gonna happen under Stan but in the grand scheme of things and the expectations this is a bad move cap wise. This team now is cap locked, good job Stan man you took us back where you are comfortable most, in a state that you can let guys like TT go and people will blame it on cap restrains but can’t use the cap space to your advantage when other teams are desperate. Pathetic clueless man.

Here we go again. Lot's of negative energy considering the Blackhawks locked up a player going into prime years.

Extending Murphy says alot about what Hawks think of Ian Mitchell IMO

Clearly dont see top 4 upside at this point locking up Jones and Murphy for top 4 RD spots

Just because they signed Murphy for 4 years doesn't mean they can't move him if Mitchell shows top 4 ability.

But I doubt the Hawks ever thought Mitchell was a potential #1 D-man.

I haven’t seen any report of a no trade clause for Murphy and Ian is still a couple years away from being a consistent regular impact top 4 player. Sometimes a move is made just because it’s good value. There doesn’t always have to be an ulterior motive.

You're right. They should just let Murphy walk for nothing in free agency next year.
