I'm curious about instances where a player was a star for a team, but their number wasn't retired for whatever reason, then later another player with that same team wears the same number and also becomes a star.
The three obvious examples that come to mind are:
Toronto #27: Frank Mahovlich and Darryl Sittler
Boston #7: Phil Esposito and Ray Bourque
NY Rangers #2: Brad Park and Brian Leetch
How common is this, and what are some other examples?
I'm also wondering about instances where there was a string of 3 or more players who each wore the same number where it was passed from one to the next, and all the players were solid important players on the team. Without there being any 4th line/bottom pairing players or any brief minor league callups wearing the number in that span.
As an example, #2 for the Philadelphia Flyers for their first 25 years:
Ed Van Impe --- Bob Dailey ---- Mark Howe
Howe is a Hall of Famer. Van Impe and Dailey were good enough to play in the All-Star Game multiple times. And they were the only players to wear the number in that span.
What would be the best or longest example of that?
