Multiple star players wearing the same number for the same team?

I'm curious about instances where a player was a star for a team, but their number wasn't retired for whatever reason, then later another player with that same team wears the same number and also becomes a star.

The three obvious examples that come to mind are:

Toronto #27: Frank Mahovlich and Darryl Sittler
Boston #7: Phil Esposito and Ray Bourque
NY Rangers #2: Brad Park and Brian Leetch

How common is this, and what are some other examples?

I'm also wondering about instances where there was a string of 3 or more players who each wore the same number where it was passed from one to the next, and all the players were solid important players on the team. Without there being any 4th line/bottom pairing players or any brief minor league callups wearing the number in that span.

As an example, #2 for the Philadelphia Flyers for their first 25 years:
Ed Van Impe --- Bob Dailey ---- Mark Howe

Howe is a Hall of Famer. Van Impe and Dailey were good enough to play in the All-Star Game multiple times. And they were the only players to wear the number in that span.

What would be the best or longest example of that?

Rangers #9:
- Andy Bathgate
- Adam Graves
- Pavel Bure
- Bernie Nicholls
(latter two had short stints and maybe weren't at their peak, but still were excellent star players)

EDIT: I misread the OP, but I think Nicholls => Graves => Bure fits the thread (nobody wore #9 in between, even though Graves to Bure wasn't an immediate handoff)

Interesting thread topic!

It's not a good answer to the OP's questions, but I'll just mention that, as a young Oilers' fan, it was odd to see Mark Lamb (of all people) wear Paul Coffey's number 7. And then after Lamb, the 7 went to Jason Arnott. So, that was two (sort-of) star players.

Likewise, Glenn Anderson's number 9. Bernie Nicholls wore it just the season after Andy left, and later Bill Guerin wore it.

Tony Esposito wore the number 29 for Montreal before Ken Dryden made it famous.

(Using goalies with #1 or #30 you'd get too many cases, but the above is unusual.)

The Rangers retired #9 for both Andy Bathgate and Adam Graves but it was also worn by Rick Middleton, Bernie Nicholls and Pavel Bure.

Number 27 for the Flyers was represented in near succession by Reggie Leach, Darryl Sittler (he also wore 9) and Ron Hextall. All three participated in NHL all-star games wearing 27 during those regular seasons.

The guys that have worn #11 on the habs since I can remember have been heart and soul guys.

Walter
Koivu
Gomez
Gallagher

One guy stands out like a sore thumb on that list though..

Montreal has also retired #12 for two players. Dickie Moore, and Yvon cournoyer.

Strangely, both were retired on the same day in 2005, decades after they had hung up the skates.

Blackhawks had number 3 with by Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson. Also, while Jobathan Toews has made number 19 famous, Troy Murray had a pretty good career for them in number 19 and number 10 worn by Tony Amonte and Patrick Sharp

Yvon Lambert, Mr Clutch, also wore 11 for the Habs. Muller as well.
