Why would the habs downgrade just to save cap space?

If they trade Weber it's not for cap space but getting younger assets. (Potential new building block)

I think Weber is either traded for younger assets (prospect/picks) or he stays until he retire.

Zaitsev is 29. Not exactly a young player but he's significantly younger than Weber.

What team is going to give any kind of significant package of young assets for a 35YR old Weber with a 7.85M cap hit for the next 5YRs?

Feel like people aren't factoring in his cap hit when valuing him.

There's no question Weber would have a decent amount of value if not for his contract, but he's 35 with a 7.857M cap hit until the end of the 2025/26 season. How much value would he have around the league because of it?
A shit ton, cause his salary for the last 3 years is 1M$, AND you hold NSH by the nuts with the cap recapture penalty.

Any team like ARI trying to get to the floor = value
AND
Lots of value for a pot trade back to NSH

I'd suggest people would consider it more if it were clear Montreal was not going anywhere in the immediate future. If Price turns it around, this team can be a playoff team and could make it a couple of rounds if everything works out.

Now, if the team falls apart and it's clear a serious retool is necessary, maybe we look at this differently, but this is a proposal for summer of 2021, not before the playoffs.

The Sens have no use for Weber this season.

The Sens might have a use for him in a season or two when they're ready for a playoff push, but I just don't know if a 37-38yr old Weber is going to be better than a 30-31yr old Zaitsev.

His cap hit is not a problem for many reasons.

Unless you are near the cap and you cannot keep your current player it becomes an issue. This is not the case for the habs with Weber. Also and more importantly although his cap hit is 7.9 he is actually getting paid way less in term of salary. Finally, Zaitsev is a lesser player than current Weber. It's not about age it's about impact to help the team.

Also he will never finish his contract. He will play the next 2 years and retire when his salary is at 1M per season.

You should check with Nashville and see how much value he has to them

Zaitsev is exceptionally underrated now lol. He's not a #1 but worth his contract. Weber is an anvil waiting to drop

Romanov-Zaitsev would actually be a very potent mobile two way pairing for Montreal and do a lot to solve their lumbering slow as balls D woes.

Lol ahhh the pipe dream some Habs fans have where they think they have the Preds over some barrel with Weber.
For that to work you need to get Weber to threaten to retire and give up 3m in cash just to screw over the team that drafted and developed him. For no personal gain to him.
so you can extort his former team by trading him back to them at a massive premium just so they can put him on LTIR.

And afterwards he needs to spend the next 3 years reporting to that team that he screwed over at the start of the season to fail a physical and stay on LTIR. I’m sure that won’t be akward at all. Again all with no person gain for Weber.

And do people still really not get these long term front loaded back diving contracts?

Weber likely won’t play a single game of the last 3 years of this deal. He will go on LTIR and be paid a million dollars a year to essentially retire.

I think this trade thread is more "smarta$$" then actual curiosity.

It makes absolutely no sense to trade Weber for a 29 year old nothing that is signed for 4.5 million to 2024. It's not going to free up cap space to sigh Hamilton, so why bother.

Not interested in this at all. Let Weber be the teacher of Guhle, Struble and Brooks.
