i don't know why anyone would think it's a bad deal... it's only 3 years, it will take him to 28, you might not need him anymore depending on who you drafted and how people developped, so he becomes a very good tradechip that you can even retain because the term isn't big. he's a hard working 2-way center. Much rather have danault at 3M than lars eller at 3.5M.

I was hoping for $2.85m, but I'm okay with it being slightly above that.

3-years is ideal, considering both Kotka and Poehling should be ready to play in 2020-21. Gives them a year with Danault to take some pressure off, and [hopefully] the Habs new GM can reassess the situation from there.

In 3 years odds are Poehling and Kotkaniemi will be in the nhl and it is likely we draft another centre this year, basically in 3 years danault may be not needed anymore. And 40pt 3C who are good on the pk get a lot at the deadline (I mean in 2.5 years)

Pretty good deal. Not everything that is not a complete steal is questionable or somehow bad.

Good contract for the Habs. He has scored at a second line rate at 5 on 5 for the Habs and has a good all-around game. Above average forward at only 3.9% of the cap is favorable to the team.

NHL rosters are 23 man rosters.

79.5 million dollar salary cap.

Equals 3.45 million per player on average.

He is typically third line centre who can provide some secondary scoring. He has been half point per game the last two years. It is a very fair contract for Montreal.

He's the perfect 2C/3C center. Really like this deal
Perfect 3C i agree, he’a a very poor 2C tho. He’s a good 2C on the defensive side, but lacks creativity and individual puck skills. He would need a guy like domi or drouin to realy step their game like they had potential to do for danault to thrive at the 2C position

Great # and term for a number 1 center.
More of a #3C on most teams, a #4C on some. On the Habs however...

If he can continue to put up about 35-40 points per season going forward this is a fine contract given the reasonable term and Danault's prime age.

Too much money for a fragile unproven player
Given the Habs centre depth (or lack there of) what were they supposed to do? They absolutely couldn't let him walk; heck, I would make a joke about needing to call up AHLers to be a top-6 centre if they did, but given Laval's abysmal performance this season, even that isn't an option.

Well that's a good deal. He's much better value than all the Filppulas and Komarovs of this off-season.
