umm... no?

Chicago needs ELC's and if they can get Shalunov in for a year or 2 on the cheap to be a productive top 9 player that would means alot

also.. noone wants Desharnais

playoff teams don't trade rentals. they dump bad contracts to acquire better talent.

DD and a 3rd to TOR for Froese. Habs clear his salary to make a move

DD is a good 3rd line center.

We just don't need him anymore with Danault playing great hockey.

DD is still a 0,5 pt/game center.

Some teams might need this kind of depth down the center for the playoffs.

DD has always been undervalued due to his shape and mostly due to an already small Habs team.

Pretty good playmaker.

Why would Chicago do this?

The Habs will have cap space to make a move thanks to injuries. And they'll just use Desharnais as a cap dump as part of the deal if they really need a lot of cap space to get done.

He isn't a rental. Depth is important, and he's useful depth. Montreal is a playoff team, and Desharnais' value to Montreal is more to them to another team (apart from a team with atrocious center depth and playoff aspirations).

He doesn't have negative value. He's still a useful asset on a 3rd or 4th scoring line and HAS AN EXPIRING CONTRACT. There's no NEED to trade him, and thus no impetus to give up an asset to move him.

I also forgot to mention the deal would happen if Chicago can't agree with Shalunov camp.

Only when he gets top 6 minutes and PP time - which he would get neither on the Hawks.

There are reports that Shalunov is interested in coming over. If he does, he will have to sign an ELC and the Hawks will have his rights for 3 more years. He's worth more to the Hawks than one playoff push with Desharnais.

Perhaps, but Shalunov is the property of the Hawks until the summer of 2020. Why would Shalunov delay coming over if he's ready? Because he doesn't like the Hawks? He will have to sign an ELC with the Hawks or any team the Hawks trade him to. He's not getting a better deal unless he waits another 3.5 years.

Technically as he'd be signing his ELC at age 23 and there is no sliding, it would only be a 2 year contract, including this year. If he waits until after the playoffs, it would only be a 1 year contract, at the end of which he'd still be an RFA.

True, but it's still an ELC whether it's with the Hawks or any other team. And he's under control until the summer of 2020 when he'll be a UFA.

I would consider this move if we had a trade lined up to pick up an impact player. If we had nothing lined up I would rather just keep him as depth for the playoffs. He's a warm body that if put in the right position could help.

I do think that given the right circumstances though that a team could use him if they were hit with an injury bug. I wouldn't be total surprised if he was traded for a 5th or something in the next couple months.

don't know what you mean by FEW YEARS but those are easily third line worthy.

You can't be serious with this.

"Easily third line worthy" if they were actually achieved from the third line.

Surely you are aware that he didn't put up the 52 or 48 point totals in a third line role.

He didn't even post the 29 points in a third line role. He got moved to the first line for stretches last year.

Do you actually think you are proving he's a good third line centre by posting numbers he posted in a totally different role?

Do you think this fools anybody? What's the point of this?
