We wouldn’t be considering trading the 3rd pick or giving up the pick regardless of team needs if Zadina was in a league of his own with the other two. There’s a drop off and there’s some really good defenceman in this draft. It depends on which teams value giving up a little bit to move up to draft a winger who may be a little bit above the group that’s just a little below him.
Go check out the draft reports and rankings. The consensus are 1,2,and 3 than a drop and we all know who sits at #3

Then why are we discussing who to pick at 3?

Dahlin
Svechnikov

Zadina
Everyone else

Zadina is a winger and that turns teams off trying to fill big roles, especially in a draft that “appears” to be D heavy in the top 10. Wingers are by far the easiest position to restock in the NHL. Zadina isn’t clear ahead of anyone because of his position and his talent doesn’t make up for it.

Zadina is third on my list. But only by a hair. When McKenzie’s poll results come out, we’ll see that Zadina isn’t the only guy with 3rd place votes among nhl scouts. I bet Tkachuk, Bouchard and Dobson each get a third place vote.

Also, if Montreal keeps the pick, there’s at least some chance they take Kotkaniemi anyway.

How is C the #1 need? They have Stepan, Dvo, Strome.

Is Strome ready to be full time 2C or does he still need a half season in the A? Can Dvorak take a big step forward and be that 2C if Strome can’t? If Dvorak is the 2C can Strome play 3C? Isn’t Stepan better suited for the 2C role? What happens if they have an injury? Depth is thin. top callup is Dauphin and he's coming off a bad injury. Who is in the pipeline that is the eventual replacement for Stepan?

Their D consists of OEL, Hjarlmarsson, Goligoski, Chychrun, and Demers. Injury issues last year but have Joseph and several 4-6 D prospects in the mix.

Young wingers in AZ organization includes Perlini, Fischer, Domi, Keller, Crouse, Merkley, Steenbergen. Room for another star beyond Keller but they have plenty of 2/3rd line talent.
