I don’t think a single team would take him for free. He’d clear waivers.

That, to me, constitutes negative value.

Carey Price would clear waivers....lmao.... in all the years I have been on these boards that is CLEARLY the most ridiculous post I have ever read and that is really saying something.... congratulations!

Maybe. Here's the thing, if a GM picks up Price he is spending $84M of the owners money. So after a sub-par injury riddled season and multiple injuries (8 in the past 5 seasons?) it could blow up badly and that is the sort of mistake the gets you fired.

So are you willing to risk your job on whether a Carey Price is going to be a great goalie for the next eight years? Knowing that losing you job means moving since there is only one NHL GM job per city.

I don't think I'd risk my job on that bet.

No doubt it's a big contract, but it isn't enough to give him negative value, not by far.
I'm not gonna take anyone side's here but FLA running on the 2nd operating income in the NHL (after ARI) connot take this contract due to the the text in RED below

For them to take Price's contract, MTL would need to retain around 25%-40% which would consist of paying the bonuses on July 1st for FLA

not taking price at 10.5per for the next, what, 8yrs? i dont believe in throwing that much money into goaltending. when was the last time a stanley cup winning goalie, at the time of the victory, was on a 8 or even 7per contract? murray and fluery combined for 3, niemi and crawford combined for 3, holtby, quick with 2, i prefer having a more well rounded team and spending no more than a combined 7 or 8 on the starter + backup. matheson also made huge strides in the second half of the season, hes our most talented skater on the backend, young, locked up longterm at what should be an affordable contract. not trading that and then some to take price's contract. would rather pursue pacioretty, petry, or even weber (depending on the price).

As has been suggested by others, Price, due to his contract and sub-standard performance last season, would very likely go unclaimed, if waived today. Since his trade value cannot get much lower, the Habs need to give him the opportunity (hopefully) to return to form next season and demonstrate that he can stay healthy. On the other hand, a healthy Price may well steal enough games to screw up the Habs tank.
