Mock draft game

I'm probably just bored with the end of the NHL and NBA finals and still over a week until the draft, but I thought it might be fun/interesting/embarrassing to run an official 'mock draft game' between now and then.

I haven't seen it anywhere around here before but the idea is pretty simple. You post your list of 30 first round selections as you think they will go down next Friday. At the end, I will score them based on how far your pick fell from the actual spot. For example, if you put Lawson Crouse down as going to Philadelphia at #7 but he actually goes to Colorado at #10, you are 'docked' 3 points. The poster with the fewest points in aggregate is the 'winner'. Any trading of picks will not affect the scoring, as it is simply how far your player prediction deviates from the actual draft.

People can post at anytime and can edit their post up until midnight, June 25 (Thursday night). Any edits after that time will invalidate your entry. For simplicity please keep it to a single post and simply edit it rather than create new posts throughout the thread.

Now obviously the nature of this 'game' rewards conservative mocks as that will limit the amount that your picks can be off by. Since that will tend to encourage fairly bland and generic mocks, I want to add a 'bonus system' for really astute predictions:

Wildcard picks

Each poster will be allowed to make 3 "bold predictions" that, if correct (i.e. are drafted at the exact spot you predicted) will count for -5 points each (i.e. will deduct 5 points from your total). If incorrect, they will not be counted against your score (i.e. they are a mulligan). You can only have 3 and they must be indicated with an asterix (*) next to the player's name. If you do not mark them with an * then they will be counted as a normal pick.

CLARIFICATION TO WILDCARD PICKS: As VKW aka "Lou Lamorello" pointed out, the WC picks actually encourage safe picks to maximize the bonus points. Since the intention was to encourage riskier picks to get some more interesting mocks, there will be restrictions on how the WC picks can be used. Specifically you can only designate a pick a WC (*) if it is at least 5 or more spots HIGHER than Mackenzie's Final Ranking (http://www.tsn.ca/mckenzie-s-final-ranking-mcdavid-eichel-and-1.300634). So no designating McD or Eichel to get easy points. I hope this encourages more variety in the mocks but if it ends up being a hassle then I'll just scrap it.

Hope this ends up being fun and, if possible, kept separate from the existing draft thread as it will make finding and scoring the mocks easier in the end.

I'll post mine in a bit but feel free to post any time or PM me with any questions or clarifications.

cheers!

K, here's my mock. Will probably edit/update it as we get closer to the draft but this is it for now. Asterixes on Harkins, Beauvillier, and Dunn.

This sounds like great fun!

1) Edmonton - Connor McDavid
2) Buffalo - Jack Eichel
3) Arizona - Dylan Strome
4) Toronto - Noah Hanifin
5) Carolina - Mitch Marner
6) New Jersey - Mikko Rantanen
7) Philadelphia - Ivan Provorov
8) Columbus - Zach Werenski
9) San Jose - Pavel Zacha
10) Colorado - Kyle Connor
11) Florida - Mathew Barzal
12) Dallas - Timo Meier
13) Los Angeles - Lawson Crouse
14) Boston - Joel Ek-Eriksson*
15) Calgary - Travis Konecny
16) Edmonton - Jakub Zboril
17) Winnipeg - Nick Merkley
18) Ottawa - Oliver Kylington*
19) Detroit - Brock Boeser
20) Minnesota - Jeremy Roy
21) Buffalo - Colin White
22) Washington - Yevgeni Svechnikov
23) Vancouver - Brandon Carlo
24) Toronto - Noah Juulsen
25) Winnipeg - Anthony Beauvillier*
26) Montreal - Paul Bittner
27) Anaheim - Jacob Larsson
28) Tampa Bay - Denis Gurianov
29) Philadelphia - Thomas Chabot
30) Arizona - Jansen Harkins

I do think that the "wild card" point system might need to be tweaked a bit though.

EDIT: Also, might I suggest that for every player that you guess on the dot, that you subtract a point as well? Might be more fun that way, in terms of guessing exactly which team might take a player, as opposed to roughly the area you expect them to fall in. Either that or a separate tally of how many players each person got exactly right.

Ah fair point re: wildcard. I'll re-think it and edit the rules in a bit. Don't want to encourage such crazy predictions as the ones above. ;)

Thanks for posting so far, looking forward to seeing more mocks as we get closer to next Friday. Remember everyone can edit their mocks at any time up until next Friday so don't feel you have to wait to get your predictions in.

Also see the OP about changes to the "wild card" (*) rule. VKW found a loophole (an embarrassingly obvious one) in the original CBA, so it was back to the drawing board for that rule.

I feel like my score won't be great... I tried not to stick toooo closely to other rankings.

I've got Beauvillier, and Svechnikov going a bit early, and I see Crouse falling a bit. Underlined my wildcard picks.

2) Buffalo - Jack Eichel
3) Arizona - Noah Hanifin

He should get one of his picks taken away for operating against the spirit of the contest.

Sounds like fun, i'll play.

Just to confirm before i do up my picks though...

There is no benefit or bonus to picking the right team+player combo, at the wrong pick number?

For example, if you nail the specific player Detroit picks, but as per typical Wings, they happen to trade back 8 spots before picking them...it's just scored as though you were 8 picks off? Yes?

Ya that's correct. More about picking "spots" than teams in this one. Though if you manage to get Detroit's pick right even after they move down 8 spots ... well that's gotta be worth at least some bragging points around here :)
