I'm probably just bored with the end of the NHL and NBA finals and still over a week until the draft, but I thought it might be fun/interesting/embarrassing to run an official 'mock draft game' between now and then.
I haven't seen it anywhere around here before but the idea is pretty simple. You post your list of 30 first round selections as you think they will go down next Friday. At the end, I will score them based on how far your pick fell from the actual spot. For example, if you put Lawson Crouse down as going to Philadelphia at #7 but he actually goes to Colorado at #10, you are 'docked' 3 points. The poster with the fewest points in aggregate is the 'winner'. Any trading of picks will not affect the scoring, as it is simply how far your player prediction deviates from the actual draft.
People can post at anytime and can edit their post up until midnight, June 25 (Thursday night). Any edits after that time will invalidate your entry. For simplicity please keep it to a single post and simply edit it rather than create new posts throughout the thread.
Now obviously the nature of this 'game' rewards conservative mocks as that will limit the amount that your picks can be off by. Since that will tend to encourage fairly bland and generic mocks, I want to add a 'bonus system' for really astute predictions:
Wildcard picks
Each poster will be allowed to make 3 "bold predictions" that, if correct (i.e. are drafted at the exact spot you predicted) will count for -5 points each (i.e. will deduct 5 points from your total). If incorrect, they will not be counted against your score (i.e. they are a mulligan). You can only have 3 and they must be indicated with an asterix (*) next to the player's name. If you do not mark them with an * then they will be counted as a normal pick.
CLARIFICATION TO WILDCARD PICKS: As VKW aka "Lou Lamorello" pointed out, the WC picks actually encourage safe picks to maximize the bonus points. Since the intention was to encourage riskier picks to get some more interesting mocks, there will be restrictions on how the WC picks can be used. Specifically you can only designate a pick a WC (*) if it is at least 5 or more spots HIGHER than Mackenzie's Final Ranking (http://www.tsn.ca/mckenzie-s-final-ranking-mcdavid-eichel-and-1.300634). So no designating McD or Eichel to get easy points. I hope this encourages more variety in the mocks but if it ends up being a hassle then I'll just scrap it.
Hope this ends up being fun and, if possible, kept separate from the existing draft thread as it will make finding and scoring the mocks easier in the end.
I'll post mine in a bit but feel free to post any time or PM me with any questions or clarifications.
cheers!
