When a goalie like Mike Smith skates 50 ft out of his net to make a play, why isn't the oncoming forecheck allowed to destroy him as soon as he has possession of the puck? He's out of his crease by a mile and playing like a skater.

Part two of this question, why don't goalies all learn how to handle the puck better as a part of their core skills? Watching Smith and he's like a 3rd defenseman back there!

a goalies equipment isnt designed to take body hits from other players. its designed differently than a skaters equipment.

even as a former goalie, i say if you leave your crease, you are fair game.

It really pisses me off that a goalie can't get hit behind the net. They're involving themselves in the play out of the crease. They should be fair game

i somewhat agree with you.
but if you have a goalie play the puck out of his crease, you will probably have players that just say "to hell with the puck.....ive got a free shot on a goalie". and then they "blow up a goalie to kingdom come" just because they could.

That should be the goalies decision to come out then. Goalies are too protected as it is.

what if a goalie makes a sliding save--left to right--and both of his skates are an inch out of the crease.....is he fair game? he is out of his crease....and he played the puck......

You people have a weird obsession with goalies getting concussed. It makes more sense anyways to strip the goalie of the puck and score rather than blowing up the goalie followed by having your face caved in by the entire opposing team. If you want to bring brawls back then sure go ahead with this idea but it'll never happen because goalie equipment isn't made to take hits. And for the record goalies aren't allowed to hit players as it always results in a penalty to the goalie so the playing field is fair right now the way it is.

Why if I intentionally shoot a puck at a non goalie does it always elicit a brawl?

Goalies don't get lit up because their equipment isn't designed for it and they are not skaters. Seems pretty evident.

I see the downsides to allowing them to be hit but then goalies should remain more or less in their crease. Protection would be assured as long as they don't exit the crease.

Make the crease 4 ft wider and a few feet further out, and call them on a delay of game penalty if every part of their body at any time entirely leaves the blue paint.

I don't think they should be fair game per se, but I DONT like that goalie KNOW they aren't fair game, and put their bodies in positions where they know the forechecker has to stop or take the 2 for hitting them. Mike Smith is a master at this, taking up the entire space behind the net to make the play.

Considering the goaltending injuries already, I'm not sure this is the season to be proposing making goaltenders more vulnerable.

This sounds like a great idea till the first time someone’s #1 goalie suffers a career-altering injury on a “questionable” hit.

Shouldn't have been Wandering around his net dangling, and kept his head up. Goalies are a bunch of pansies. I wouldn't mind seeing goalies get blown up for leaving their net and playing the puck. If players get railed for playing the puck, so should the goalies behind the net or far out of the crease.

What part of “questionable” didn’t sink in the first time?

Let's let the people never played a game themselves decide all the other rules as well!

Goalies really aren't mobile as skating while holding posession of the puck is really clumsy.

"Hey! Why can't we hit the most important individual of the team, whose gear is not designed for physical contact and who is unable to avoid a hit? I feel it is unfair we can not!"

Let's say goalies are fair game. What happens?

1. Hire a 7' 300 lbs goon/hitman that can barely skate, for one game
2. Have him destroy the #1 goalie of your opponent (especially in playoffs)
3. The goalie is now out for the season
4. The goon is expendable and you now have a much better chance of winning the playoff series with "zero" cost. Maybe the goon gets a fine of 5000 USD, but you can simply pay him say 15k and he is now 10k richer by playing a couple of minutes of "hockey".

I think most teams would consider 15k a cheap price to take out your opponent's #1 goalie and give you a much higher chance of winning the series.
