Welp, can't say I'm thrilled NJD got Gusev.

We're still better, but this makes it much harder to mock them.
They didn't give up much and the contract is fine... more or less just to see how he plays. NJD are going to be a decent team, however, I still feel they're overrated. Trying to take away all bias there, but still...

2nd, 3rd and $4.5M for a promising but unknown Russian forward (who Vegas didn't think worthy of clearing cap room).
We're struggling to find spots for Frost and Farabee, doubt we'd have much use for Gusev.
Gusev is hard to project, huge numbers in the MHL, but two big scoring seasons only got him drafted in the 7th round.
At 20-21 in the KHL: 74g 12-15 27.
Starts scoring in the KHL at 22, and by 23 is posting impressive numbers.
Problem is he's 26 with no NA experience. And KHL scoring doesn't necessarily translate, we've seen this with Varone, AHL MVP.
Also question how big he is, EP has him at 5'11 181, other reports 5'9 154

What to expect from newest Golden Knight Nikita Gusev
Why New Jersey Devils Should Avoid Nikita Gusev

It's a reasonable gamble for NJ, which lacks depth, has cap room and can pair him Hughes (but defensively that line will be a mess).

I feel some divisional teams, specifically WSH, will pray on the lack of size and weight. Lol if they pair Simmer with them as the muscle.

Lotta cash for Gusev. He may be worth it, or he may be Shipyachev (not looking up the spelling).

NJ has been willing to trade 2nd rounders for immediate help:

Gusev for 2nd+3rd
Subban for 2 2nds+ Santini+Davies
Johansson for 2nd+3rd
Palmieri for 2nd+3rd
Grabner for 2nd

NJ "expected" forward lineup:

Hall - Hischier - Bratt
Gusev - Hughes - Palmieri
Boqvist - Zacha - Simmonds
Coleman - Zajac - Wood

We traded more for Justin Braun. Nice.

Gusev has question marks. Braun does not.

NJ has been willing to trade 2nd rounders for immediate help:

Gusev for 2nd+3rd
Subban for 2 2nds+ Santini+Davies
Johansson for 2nd+3rd
Palmieri for 2nd+3rd
Grabner for 2nd

Well, Gusev is the best player in the KHL and just turned 27. He's no sure thing, but the upside there is tremendous. It's a fair gamble. If you're going to trade picks, better that than 4th liners at the deadline.

Subban 2 years ago was a top 5 defenseman in the league. He'll be their #1, and there is plausible room for steal value, even if he's past his prime.

They recouped a 2nd+4th trading Johansson to Boston. Johnasson was very good when they traded for him. He's been set back by injury. But the value at the time was quite cheap.

Palmieri has been a strong 2nd line 30/55 player for them. He was 24 years old and an RFA at the time of the trade.

The Grabner trade was horrendous. Everyone knew it. That said, he was a panic rental. None of the other players have been rentals. I'd say all of the other moves have paid, will pay, or should've paid dividends. I think there's a clear distinction between these moves and a certain move we made.

NJ "expected" forward lineup:

Hall - Hischier - Bratt
Gusev - Hughes - Palmieri
Boqvist - Zacha - Simmonds
Coleman - Zajac - Wood
Hall/Giroux (I think PHI, but Draw?) - Hischier/Couturier (PHI) - Bratt/TK (PHI)
Gusev/JVR (X) - Hughes/Hayes (X, but NJD) - Palmeri/Voracek (PHI)
Boqvist/Lindblom (X) - Zacha/Patrick (PHI) - Simmonds/Farabee*Frost (X)
Coleman/Raffl (NJD) - Zajac/Laughton (?) - Wood/Pitlick (NJD)

just basing off of forwards, PHI, on paper, has the edge by a bigger margin. I'm obviously a homer which is partially why it is mainly PHI>NJD, however, I don't think I am far off. NJD seems to have a better 4th line and that's it. Weird how mainly "analysts" or even betting programs have both NYR and NJD above PHI in rankings.

Point was not all KHL players have translated big numbers to NHL production, the same way Varone could be a top AHL player yet a marginal NHL player. Some players master low level competition after a couple years but can't translate to the NHL.

Shero also got Mueller and a 5th for a 2nd and 3rd. Maroon for a 3rd.
But got a 2nd for Boyle, 3rd for Lovejoy and 2nd and 4th for Johansson.

2015: Zacha #6, Blackwood #42, Speers #67
2016: McLeod #12, Bastian #41, Anderson #73, Bratt #162
2017: Nico #1, Boqvist #36, Zetterlund #63, Walsh #81
2018: Ty Smith #17 [no 2nd, 3rd]
2019: Hughes #1, Okhotyuk #61, Misyul #70, Clarke #80, Vukojevic #82

Zacha's pretty much a flop, Blackwood had a meh career until his SSS run last year.
McLeod: AHL 55g 6-27 33, NHL, 21g 0-3 3 ; Bastian 58g 8-16 24 (2nd AHL season),
Anderson 2yr Minn-Duluth, solid WJC-20, last year NHL 34g 4-3 7
Boqvist SHL 51g 13-22 35
Walsh, undersized D-man had good numbers with Harvard at 19: 33g 12-19 31
Ty Smith, undersized D-man has two good CHL years, > ppg, POs: 22g 3-13 16

So Shero's drafting is a mixed record, Zacha, McLeod underperforming as top picks, but good finds in Bratt, Boqivst and Walsh to balance out misses in Bastian, Speers and Zetterlund.
Of course, it's hard to miss with two #1 picks!

Subban was never a top 5 defenseman in the NHL. And now he’s a Lecavalier-esque disaster.

Fans worry way too much about what particular "rivals" are doing. With the wildcard system the other 15 other teams in the East are all competitors for the same playoff spots the Flyers are going for, and we play teams in the Atlantic three times and other Metro teams four times. So Florida's offseason moves matter almost as much as what NY and NJ did.
