Petry legitimately looks like a vampire or some shit.

Hindsight is always 20/20.
Some of the people enamored with Petry now and making fun of the Oilers and that trade for a 2nd and a 4th were strictly against getting him onto the Flyers.

He was traded as a pending UFA rental & ultimately signed with Montreal before July 1st that year. He never hit the market. The Flyers weren’t in the playoff hunt that year & even traded Coburn themselves.

Not really sure the point of this as the opportunity never really realistically presented itself.

That sounds like revisionist history. I know Petry was valued as a sneaky good player on the Oilers pre-trade, and that trade was laughed at without any hindsight.

Petry has gotten better with age, as someone said. He's been better in Montreal than he was in Edmonton, especially the last few years. Maybe playing for a more organized team has been beneficial. Or maybe he's just one of those somewhat rare guys who keeps improving into his 30s. Giordano was like that. Mike Knuble was like that.

I hope we're not going to get the "if only we had Management like the Habs" riffs now.
Snuck into the playoffs with 86 points (prorated) in the weakest division.
They made a few decent moves:

4/21 Gus for 2022 7th rd
3/21 Staal for 3rd and 5th
12/20 Perry FA
10/20 Toffoli - FA, 4yr/$17M, having a great playoff but probably not sustainable
10/20 Anderson for Domi & 3rd
9/20 Edmundson for 5th rd, trade & sign, 4yr/$14M
7/19 Chairot FA, 3yr/$10.5M
10/18 Kulak for Taormina & Valiev
6/18 Armia, Mason & 4th for Bourque (think this was salary dump for Mason) [at 24, Armia had 23 ES points in 79 games]
9/18 Suzuki, Tatar & 2nd rd for Pacioretty
2/16 Danault & 2nd for Fleischman and Weise [at age 22, the #26 pick was a flop, with 5 ES points in 30 games for Chicago]
10/15 Byron, waivers

Danault should be a cautionary tale about giving up on young players too quickly, i.e. Patrick.

Danault is a completely different player than Patrick.

6/19 Drafted Cole Caulfield at 15.*

:naughty:

*This should not be construed as either a positive outlook on Bergevin or a slam on Cam York.

A defenseman gets better as his career ages and he starts playing in a system that is sensibly organized. Imagine that. Just trade Myers and Sanheim and be done with them. Need vetz.
