it's valuable to offload mojo's contract which wasn't great but wasn't immovable. I just don't see staal at 36 in the last year of his deal all that valuable to a non contending buffalo squad outside of buying a development year for cozens as others have pointed out, but then you could argue keeping mojo would have accomplished the same although they still would have needed to eventually move his deal. minnesota certainly didn't have to do this trade though
What could a cup winning, multi time playoff success veteran teach a young up and coming team? I would think a shit ton is the answer you are looking for. He also provides stability in the 2C role as a stopgap for Cozens. This is a massive W for Buffalo.

OK, legit question. Do you feel the Minny management group is clever enough to do some 2-3 season retool genius move? If their idea is to tank the next season, get past the expansion draft, then go full bore at that time, some of these moves could make a ton more sense in terms of the duality of the steps towards and away from contention.

But if you don't think they are clever enough, we just all gotta step back and see if someone is drunk behind the wheel.
UNless MO Jo is traded in next 24 hours clever, genius and Minnesota management do not belong in the same sentence.

We're still gathering the evidence. Guerin has been here for only a year. This one sure doesn't help much, unless it's tied to something else.

he already waived his NMC to come to the islanders. Trade fell through. Parise and Ladd both waived. It’s common knowledge. Parise is probably happy to stay in MIN but he was ready and willing to be an islander. Probably has a lot to do with his Father and Lamoriello

Yeah that was before the flat cap and Pageau extension though. Parise for Ladd is a win for the Wild, but the Islander needs more cap relief in a possible deal, and if the Islander's goal is to get better the only other salary options they can send back are dumps(or the Wild retain on Parise) that would tilt the favor back to them without assets being attached, and having moved 3 of their 4 1st/2nds over the next 2 drafts leaves them with few options to make that deal work, unless Leddy can get some of those assets.

buffalo was 13th in the east this year. they certainly are not close to contending. who in the east are they leapfrogging next year when it goes back to a 16 playoff team format?

I mean, If Dahlin improves, Skinner rebounds to even just a 20/45 guy, a few prospect like CM step up, anything can happen, a hot goalie, who knows.

I don't think you see Staal hit 50 pts anymore
He had 47 this past year in 60 or so games, and was well above 5o the past 3. Fair enough if you think that, thats your call. Regardless, getting Staal for a guy who has barely scored 70 total in the past 4 years and costs more is a heck of a deal.

I assume Minnesota has another move or two incoming, but it’s a bad move. Seriously how many middle-six left wingers does Minnesota need? Especially a fairly expensive one in Johansson.

Trading away your best center for a winger that you don’t need who costs more makes no sense. Great trade for Buffalo. Filled their biggest need at zero cost and they save real dollars

They currently have one of the best young forwards and defensemen in the league. They could easily ride a Dahlin / Eichel explosion especially with some of the forward talent they have and they are one of the few teams in the league with a literal dump truck of cap space. They are in the perfect position to prey on teams trying to cut salary.

Not to mention Skinner and Staal could easily rekindle their relationship after being reunited and turn into a legit force of a 2nd line.

Minnesota definitely has to be making another trade. They have nothing at center. Perhaps they use Dumba for that?
