Arizona probably sees the market for starting goalies and would be trying to capitalize on some value for him for a team that needs one

Hes an unreal goalie... Have always wondered why a contender has never wanted him... Or who knows maybe he just wants to continue living in paradise(arizona)

When Smith is on he's very good. The problem is that in most seasons he manages to have a bad month or so stretch of play that detracts from the good period.

Friedman must read the Coyotes forum a lot.

Pretty much in agreement with mouser above. He's a lights out goaltender when he's on, but there will be times when something (usually the opposing team) gets in his head and he'll stink the rink up.

50% retained to Toronto for?

Would have to be a substantial return value for 50% retention imo. Don't have a problem with Smith finishing out his contract with the Yotes. He has a $5.67m cap hit, at his worst has still performed at a $4m+ level.

It's not like Arizona has some youngster backup goalie ready to replace him creating an urgency to move Smith with major salary retention.

Someone on Calgary Puck known to have at least one source/friend in the Flames organization mentioned a while back that Treliving had interest in Smith.

His puck moving would be a welcomed addition to any teams breakout. He's a rare PMG

That is actually why I think he would be a good fit in Calgary. His ability to play the puck would fit will with Hamilton, Brodie and Giordano, plus the Flames have issues clearing their zone sometimes and he could be an asset in that regard as well. He's obviously not my top choice for the Flames, but I don't think he's as bad as his numbers have been the last few years.

Underrated? The guy has one really good season and during every other season he has been mediocre or bad. You'd have to be a very stupid GM to give very much for him even at 50% retained, so welcome to Vancouver Mr. Smith.

He was excellent this year behind an objectively bad team. He is money in the playoffs. That makes him an answer if a team is looking for an experienced starter.

With all due respect, Arizona has been an awful team forever. If there has been an issue with smith its injuries but otherwise I think he's an ok goaltender.

I just don't think Arizona wants to pay salaries anymore in their final hurrah.

Well, the team really didn't help him, and he's one of the best puck-handling goaltenders in the league, thanks to Sean Burke.

His puck-moving ability makes him a very good goalie.

As a Devils fan that went from Brodeur's mastery with the puck to Schneider's incompetence, it makes a world's difference when you can develop a system with a goalie that can move the puck. They can negate offensive zone time by themselves and take tons of pressure/wear-and-tear off of your defenders.

He could be a solid fit in Calgary.

He actually didn't get along with Sean Burke, and he learned how to puckhandle from Turco in Dallas.

He got his injury situation straightened out this season and was good to great most of the year. His play and the play of Domingue down the stretch is the only reason the Coyotes weren't Avalanche bad.
