I too, have been much impressed by Rasmussen’s improvement in the D and neutral zone. Maybe the offense never comes, he certainly isn’t overly creative or gifted with great vision, but I do think he has solidified himself as a legitimate niche NHLer. And given the last few years, I’ll take that as a win. Bringing up draft capital is just a symptom of sunk cost fallacy

It's always interesting how things progress with prospects when you start to hash out who they really are. A lot of us said Rasmussen would basically be Brian Boyle and we got the typical, "oh you are giving up on him too soon!" or "no way, he'll be much better than Boyle!"

At some point the people who argued on that point stop chiming in and the conversation ends. I am fine with him being a bottom 4 center or middle 6 winger, it's not like he's ever going be on an awful contract in Detroit, he'll always be paid for the type of role he plays, not based on his draft position.

Really wish Holland hadn't reached for Raz, I'd take any of the 5 centers picked right after him. A little annoyed today after watching Suzuki.
For sure. As I said in the GDT, if Ras has consistent production like a young Riley Sheahan, ~13G & ~15-20A, then at this point I will take it. Because as it stands this was a horrible pick and asking for anything more is gonna feel like a reach.

He was a reach, and he’s never going to have the success he did in juniors, but he is useful. His faceoffs have improved greatly, he’s using his body, and he’s almost 0.5 PPG. He’s doing okay.

Rasmussen was a totally wasted pick at #9, Ken Holland should've 100% taken Martin Necas he's tons better.

This makes me sad....

At this point I’m not sure if he’ll score 20 goals in his career
Maybe if they switch him to wing and have Raymond bounce the puck off his ass

He took a poor man's Holmstrom with a top ten pick....

He consistently loses the one-on-one battles. It would appear he just doesn't have the upper body strength, despite his size, to be truly competitive in this league. I doubt we will see much improvement at his age.

He’s such a disappointment. He still can be a decent 4C if he can figure out how to use his size but the offensive skill and IQ just ain’t there.

I'm going to sound unreasonably reasonable regarding Rasmussen. (Holy alliteration, Batman!)

The 2 games against the Habs he was bad, for sure. But so were about 14 other people on Detroit's bench those games. I don't think he'll ever be a top 6 player but he's been playing like an ok to middling 3C this year in 8 of the 10 games.

...That being said, I still think Veleno is the better player NOW and is more versatile overall. And I think he'll be the better player in the future. But I also think they should both be playing about 15-17 minutes a night in the NHL.

last nite showed why razz's agent agreed to a 1.5 contract = he doesnt have top 6 talent . hes a limited grinder with big body and hustle that max's out at a 3C level and by miracle a 2 line winger with two very talented line mates . and maybe becomes an excellent career 4C grind lining center . so im predicting he will always be villified because the cane could have been drafted there , but maybe long term he keeps improving a little bit at a time (needs off ice coordination / agility training) and has a long career as a very valuable but unspectacular bottom 6 grind liner dude . not a bad thing if he isnt over paid . and his size n reach could become extremely valuable as a long term monster pk guy...

Looking like a career 4th liner. I thought he made huge progress at the end of last year but just not seeing it so far this year. Zero offensive capabilities.

Next time someone uses appeal to authority to chastise people on this board for doubting professionals, keep in mind the near entirety of this site and Reddit HATED this and the Cholowski picks the moment they were made.

Obviously Yzerman has earned some leeway, but scouts are far from infallible

I was at the draft in Chicago. I was very high on Necas, and I believed the Wings were too. When he was available at 9 I thought we were taking him. As the pick was announced I stood up to clap and then when Rasmussen's name was called, I....well.... I was surprised. And in hindsight, yeah, Suzuki, Norris, Thomas, Chytil.... all superior players playing center in the NHL right now. And while I'm not high on Vilardi, good argument for him too obviously.

From my memory it was reported the Wings took Rasmussen, Necas, and Lias Andersson out for dinner. They were definitely considering him.

Sounds right. I knew they had made a connection with Necas, and he just seemed like the best fit to me. I won't say he was the obvious pick, but to me he was much more obvious than Ras. In the days and weeks afterward I kept searching for something about Rasmussen that could explain why they chose him over Necas. I never found it.

Vilardi and Chytil are off to a slow start but I didn't include Chytil when I said the next 5 centers (Chytil would be 6th). Vilardi has been a little suspect after his back injury.

Kinda thinking Necas would have been Stevie's pick if he was in charge. Best skater out of the bunch. Haven't watched Josh Norris at all....
