McDavid will never wear a Leaf sweater, at least a blue and white one. He'll play his whole career in Edmonton and retire an Oiler.

Pretty cool idea.

Give him an offer sheet that takes him right to UFA and if the oilers match they won't get any cap relief in the form of a discount on McDavid and also won't be able to buy any of his UFA years

That's a good lesson for the young kids.

"Alright, pack it in, game over!"

What proof was there that they were going to get 2 goals in in the remainder of the period?

Based off evidence of the PP in the game IMO I didn't see as worth while tactic. It's got nothing to do with giving up. I would've preferred him to pull the goalie at 3-2 with 7 minutes left.

I guess it's possible if he's keen on leaving the Oilers for Toronto or elsewhere, but it'd be a big risk on his part to leave that much term and money on the table.

he's not going to be leaving that much money on the table imo.

Oilers aren't going to offer max, so even if they offer say a 8 year 10 million dollar contract that's 80 million.

We offer sheet 4xmax, what is max now 14? That's 56 million with an additional 4 years after that to earn more.

He's leaving 24 million guaranteed on the table, but for those extra 4 years he'd make that up and more.

He might re-up with the Oil before ever getting to the point of an offer sheet though. Time will tell.

Yeah something like that... Offer sheet him right out of his ELC and give him max with term that takes him right up to free agency. He knows the oilers will match anything so he pretty much gets a max deal right out of his ELC and when that deal is up he'll be a UFA and we'll (hopefully) be close to contending.

Probably will never happen but would be awesome if it did.

That only works if McDavid accepts the offer sheet. If Edmonton goes to him before he accepts and offers him 8 years at max then he'd be stupid to not take it. If edmonton is willing to match an offersheet of 4 years @ max then they are guarenteed to be willing to offer him 8 years instead @ max so they don't lose him in UFA where any team can offer him max.

Eh, McDavid seems like the lifer type. Meaning he'll probably stay in one organization for his career. That Strome kid on the other hand tho...

:sarcasm:

Not comparable. Soft hearted, calm types aren't always like that. Steven Stamkos personality wise is VERY similar to McDavid, yet he took a shorter RFA deal to get to UFA signing time faster (by the time he is now 26) and if he really wanted to be in Tampa so badly, he would have taken their offer right away instead of gauging the UFA market as his agent probably told him.

Agree. Better chance at getting Wiggins to Toronto than McJesus.

Nah lol. More likely Connor comes here. The cap is significantly higher in basketball and Minnesota is looking to be a great team. It'll be way easier to get him max money, than for him to come to a team that probably can't offer him such money.

The Oilers aren't a budget team, they pretty much give him whatever he wants, and make cap room wherever or however they can. Like threeGo said above, if they'd match a shorter term max deal, they'd likely be able to go to 8 as well.

atleast the one thing about the oilers, they are destined for cap hell sooner then later. its a matter of offering more then they can afford in a cap world. sooner then later they aren't going to have 10 million of free cap space laying around.

Not my point. We can screw them over via offer sheet if it comes to that, because they wouldn't be able to surround him with anything close to NHL caliber and wouldn't be afforded any depth nor any defensive talent either.
