The big question is how much do people value scoring goals vs overall points. This is the closest these 2 have been in points since they've both been in the league, but that lead is rapidly widening over the last 10 games or so.

In their last 10 games McDavid has 16 points and Matthews has 17. Only reason it really widened is the suspension

McDavid is average defensively and Matthews is above average. Any talk of them being Selke level is BS.

However McDavid is always the better player including this year
This....this Leafs Nation narrative that Matthews is some god on defense to try and prop him up to McDavids level is laughable. Matthews is having an amazing season and is the best goal scorer in the league.

McDavid.

By seasons end he’ll likely have 20+ more points than Matthews as he’s been heating up after a brutal 2 month stretch under Tippett where everyone struggled.
By Seasons end Matthews will have way more goals and have won the Rocket again.

Not only that. Matthews still leads the NHL in points per game since November. The fact that McDavid goes on a little streak that isn't any better than what Matthews has been doing for 4 months now and suddenly most people think McDavid is having the better season tells you all you need to know about the classic HFboards analysis, it's points and nothing else.

The season didn't start in November. Why are you using since November? lol

The poll says **this season**

Because the post I was replying to said he has been better for the past 10 games. He hasn't been and also hasn't been for the past 5 months. Matthews started the season slow after returning from a wrist injury and missing training camp so he wasn't his usual self right off the bat. That doesn't even need to be considered for Matthews to be having the better season though. 60+ goal pace + elite two-way game easily beats a marginal difference in points per game with far worse goal scoring and average to slightly above average defensive play.

If you watched the All star skating competition and any of the Oilers games, you would know there's something off with McDavid. Don't be surprised in the offseason we find out he was playing hurt since december. 14 points is a pretty big gap and it's only getting wider now that McDavid is heating up

Matthews has played 6 less games. Would only be a 6 point gap if Matthews were to play those 6 games at the current pace he has so far this season. That's close enough for me to give the edge to Matthews considering the edge he has in both goal scoring and defensive play.

McDavid also has 6 more empty net points, so their production on a goalie is roughly equal per game.

Yeah but McDavid has played 6 more games. In 6 more games Matthews would have 50 goals already and be within 5 points of McDavid. McDavid may have been playing hurt or sick or whatever sure, but it still wouldn't change that Matthews has had the better season. If McDavid blows him away next year or for the rest of this season then I will say McDavid is still better and even had the better season. I don't see Matthews not finishing strong though.

And McDavid averages an extra minute per game on the powerplay with a far larger portion of points being secondary assists. All things considered McDavid is barely the better offensive player this season.

The elite two way thing is a bit of a myth. Matthews has been on the ice for most even strength goals against than McDavid despite playing in 6 less games.

As a neutral,

Matthews, up until this point in the year has been the best player in the NHL.

but

McDavid is still the best player in the game.

No myth about it and this argument has been rehashed and proven wrong every single time.

That's purely speculation and point production is not linear in any way. There's a lot of season left and even using your flawed logic of "within 5 points of McDavid," McDavid would still be ahead in points and has a argument for the better season.

Surely the remainder of your post isn't also suggesting that McDavid has to displace Matthews at the top of the league? Again, this poll is who is better this season, in which Matthews has an argument. In terms of who is the better hockey player - that is a completely different question and the gap widens dramatically in favour of McDavid. McDavid doesn't need to blow Matthews away, Matthews needs to blow McDavid away to take the throne.
