Benoit’s preseason was easily the most horrific performance I’ve seen from a supposed NHL defenceman. Hopefully it was part rust, because he was off the charts brutal.

Why did they sign Benoit and keep him as the 7th if they never intend to play him?

You have point. He might be the likely call-up. Who knows?

My advice to Simon Benoit:

You only get 1 opportunity to make a first impression.

I went to the Marlies game on Tues. I paid particular attention to Kokkenen. He certainly capable of playing on TOR in the bottom pairing.

I'm not a pro scout, but I didn't notice any flaws in his game. He just quietly did all the good things that you expect from a Defenseman.

The People have spoken and the People have selected William Lagesson. It was never in doubt.

Come on down William.

It could still be Benoit playing or was he sent down?

He wasn't up with the Leafs. Minten was the 21st player (Leafs don't have cap space for 22 players). Now it's Lagesson.

Unless McCabe goes on LTIR, they can't recall Benoit on top of Lagesson.

Thanks, not sure why I thought he was on the roster.

He's been up and down 3-4 times already this months. I'd have thought it was a move on paper only and that he was still practicing with the big squad, but I guess not. Hasn't played for Marlies either though, not sure what that all adds up to.

I was wrong... for now.

It's the right move. Lagesson had a better preseason. He has a bit of NHL experience last having played 33 games for the Oilers/Canadiens in 2021-2022. I'd rather it have been Kokkonen but let him continue to gain experience with the Marlies.

All of our call up options either suck or are not NHL ready. At least Benoit played regularly last year.
But he stinks now, stunk in preseason, and stank last season. He's not a reliable defenceman. He's good as a 7th defenceman where we can play cap gymnastics with him but they don't trust him playing in the top 6.

Not a good start to his Leaf career, but I wouldn't mind trying to get some Jordie Benn service time out of him in a pinch, and up his value a little bit.
