Montreal
Habs trade
Patch(50% retained)

Carolina trades
1st
Gauthier

Carolina boosts their offense without giving up anything on their roster and the habs get a 1st to go along with a big boy from Quebec that shoots right.

No. Canes can't be trading their 1st, which will very likely be a lottery pick, for a rental.

And before someone brings up "extending him", the Canes aren't going to spend that much money/term on a guy that will be close to 31 when his next contract kicks in. Nor do I think patches would re-sign in Carolina.

The term "lottery pick" is so misleading now. Even if you just mean they won't make the playoffs, thereby being in the lottery, many people will still read this as "top 5".

I agree, Carolina doesn't need a 1 year rental, let alone at that price. That's exactly opposite of their plan, as they're currently trying to get futures for their own rental winger.

I see the canes doing the playoff with the current Defensive lineup, they only need 1 legit goalie

True. I meant it as in "they won't make the playoffs" and the pick could be anywhere from ~12 or lower. Canes are in no position to be trading 1st round picks for a rental.

I agree. The only way we move our first is to a team like Columbus in a trade for Bob.

Do two mediocre goalies equal one legit goalie?

I wish it would , a bit like the fusion in Dragon ball :

We have:
1) a rookie head coach with two new assistant coach
2) two terrible goaltenders
3) only 2 guys on the roster who have played any significant center in the NHL (Rask and Staal)
4) potentially 4 rookies (Necas, Svechnikov, Zykov + Wallmark/Foegele) in the starting line-up.

I don't know what to expect right now, but I do know that trading for a rental is not the right approach for the team where it stands right now. I do know that they don't have a better roster that WSH, PIT, PHI, BOS, TBL, TOR and probably FLA. So they would be battling NJ, CLB, and any other surprise team for 1 playoff spot.

It's possible, but not likely, even with a better goalie. Of course, a lot depends on how well all the new guys mesh (both offense and defense), how the rookies perform, and nobody getting injured.

Either way, trading for Patches isn't the right move.

ROR would have been a good fit, but right now with Neca and stall you have a great 1-2 center line, Plus you have probably the best Defensive roster in the league for the next 10 years. I agree, you need a #1 goaltender right now

Counting on Necas to be a 1C right now is pretty lofty expectations. Maybe he'll be there some day, but right now, I'd be ecstatic if he is able to be a decent 3C for his rookie season.

He will do well as a #2c for this year and staal can still be a decently good #1c. Svech/aho/staal will do a crazy good line. Still a young roaster but i see them on the wild card spot.

The term “lottery pick” means a pick that is entered into the Draft lottery. All lottery picks have a premium attached because all lottery picks have a chance to be #1-2-3.

It’s very simple. Nothing misleading.

More than likely the Canes will have a lottey pick next year. Hard truth of it. This year’s lottery win proves it would be foolish to trade it away.

I know what it means. It's a 1st round pick from a non-playoff team. But it doesn't always read that way.
