Actually, 1992 there was an incident. Several witness testimonies from Ruokolahti area, Finland, claimed they had seen a lion in a woods. Of course, media hype was ready and government officials organised proper inquiry, they gave kill warrant to hunters tracing the animal. Soon after 'witness' testimonies began come from other areas too. In the end nothing was ever found, but persistent rumors about lions in Finnish forests continued long after immediate media phenom. There was rumors about escaped Russian circus lion trespassing borders etc.
