I like Marty the leader. I'm a bit surprised at the term being 3 years and the dollars are a little surprising too. I thought they may move on or leave a spot for a ute. Tangible Marty isn't worth 1.8m, but intangible Marty may be.

It’s a little higher on dollars and term than I’d like, but I really don’t think you can let a guy like Martinook go unless someone offers him silly money.

Over the past three years, two players have been so obviously impactful on this team’s chemistry that even we as outsiders could see it clearly: Justin Williams and Jordan Martinook. Williams is no longer an option, but they kept him in the fold as long as possible. They’ll do the same with Martinook. A 4th line winger losing a little bit of his game won’t destabilize your team, but losing core leadership will.

In 2019/2020 there was a Storm Brew selfie competition via Instagram. You could take a picture of yourself in front of a lifesize Jordan Martinook cardboard cutout holding a 4-pack of Storm Brews. For my birthday that year, a dear friend gave me a lifesize Martinook and I put him in my house. Each day these past few weeks, I have asked Jordan "Why aren't you going to stay in Carolina, buddy?", and he never responded. I don't care the AAV or whatever, I am just so glad I can keep Martinook in my house.

I don't know if it resulted in extra money, but I suspect that with TDA coming in they wanted Marty in the room as another stabilizing influence.
